New Goal: Chasing The 1x

I’ve pretty much locked down and have a great system using any 5x cards for manufactured spending. Any multiplier will make manufactured spending easier and adds to the point accumulation faster.

I’m putting up the challenge for myself to use a 1x multiplier card. Why? Because if you can master the 1x, that means you can make points easily and profitably. Because it’s the lowest level of earning points, it makes it the highest hurdle to earn.

So here’s some ideas of how I’m going to Chase The 1x base, most of it is pretty common, basic information that you would find with little sleuthing:

  • eBay gift card deals when the deal is near a breakeven proposition
  • buying American Express gift cards
  • load up Visa Buxx type of cards

It’s the more advanced techniques where the 1x play will make it more exciting. It’ll be a tough challenge, but one that will be worthwhile. This past week, I was able to locate a good gift card churn and bought over $10,000 worth of gift cards in 3 days, a new record.

  • Gift card churn is fine – IF you have a way of reselling. I had an opportunity to buy several hundred thousand in gift cards recently (at negative net cost) but none of the resellers would touch that volume, so I ended up doing a fraction of what I “could” have done.

    • Absolutely right! It’s like buying a bajillion prepaid cards and being stuck with no liquidation methods

  • Maybe this has changed recently, but I thought Citi charged the dreaded cash advance fee when ordering AMEX gift cards. This would be a game-changer for sure!

    • It’s still mostly true, I forget which version (Visa or MasterCard) that doesn’t code as cash advance, but it’s around now

  • What’s the point of using a 1x card for loading Buxx cards when you can use a 2x or 1.5 card?

    • To spread the love around issuers and credit limits. I can put far more spend on 5x and 2x cards than I am comfortable doing, so I use some of the options above (Buxx in particular) to generate spend on other 1x cards. Although it doesn’t work for Buxx, having a good, cost-neutral (or profitable) 1x spend is great for the SPG Amex too.

        • Quicksilver works great for NW Buxx and Citi DC is perfect for US Buxx… I’m just about to find out what really happens when loading NWB with the Citi though. Will see about that when the new statement cuts.

          • Thanks for the heads up

  • i would like to get a Buxx card but don’t have a teen, can I just sign up for one without issues? Can I pay bills after loading it w/ a cc? I’m sorry but the FAQs are geared towards teen spending.

    Thanks

    • You can use yourself on the NW Buxx that’s what I did. The Buxx cards natively don’t support bill pays so you’ll need to find a place that will accept it.
