Staples Gift Cards

In an earlier post, I discussed the idea of buying a Staples gift card through the Ultimate Rewards Mall and swapping for other gift cards.

Today, during my lunch break I strolled into the Staples with gift card in hand ready to make the swap. I had picked out: $25 Amazon, $25 Barnes and Noble, and $50 Home Depot. Just as I was about to swipe the Staples gift card I was stopped by the cashier. She proceeded to tell me that I could not do that.
Here was the conversation:

Cashier1 “That’ll be $100”
I am about to swipe the Staples gift cardCashier1 “Oh, you can’t use a gift card to pay for other gift cards”
Me “I was told I could do this…”
Cashier1 speaks to Cashier2 “Can he do that?”
Cashier2 “No”
Cashier1 proceeds to run to the back office for a manager like she caught someone stealing something.Manager enters sceneManager “You can’t pay for gift cards with gift cards”
Me “I was told by someone from corporate I could…”
Manager proceeds to dial in a furious pace to a phone number in corporateManager into phone “This is store XXXX, and my employee ID is XXXXXX, and I have a customer here who wants to buy $25 Amazon, $25 Barnes and Noble, and $50 Home Depot gift cards, he says he can buy with a gift card”
Manager to me “You can’t do it, whoever told you from corporate is wrong, you’ll need to speak with them and possibly mail it to them to have them write a check to you.”
Me “Ok, do you know why I can’t do this?”
Manager “No, but we train our cashiers that they can’t accept gift card payments when purchasing a gift card, they are all held accountable.”

There goes that idea… I did notice that all of the gift cards sold at Staples and Kmart are through Gift Card Mall.

Now, my options with the gift card are: spend it, sell it on a site like Plastic Jungle for cash, or sell it to United for miles.
