There are 5 flavors of American Express prepaid cards:
Bluebird
Target
Campus Edition
- First load can potentially receive $10 free
Of the above 5, I have enrolled in 3: Serve, Bluebird, and Campus Edition.
I signed up the Serve this morning when I saw there was the $25 deal load. I was skeptical if I could sign up for this card because it was reported online that many folks who had the Serve couldn’t sign up for the Bluebird until the Serve was closed. I was able to register for both. Bluebird first then Serve. However, I could not use the same email address as the Bluebird account.
On Friday, November 9, I purchased the American Express Campus Edition card. When I registered for my card, I didn’t see anything about the $10 free for reloading. I will see what will happen.
For me, I find the convenience of the campus edition card better than the Target version. I’ve been to one Target, and they did not have the card. I’ll try another Target soon.
Here’s low down on the Target and Campus Edition:
Campus Edition — $500 max load @ $3.95 fee. This becomes a .8% fee to load.
Target — $1000 max load @ $3 fee. This is a .3% fee.
The Campus Edition has a 167% higher fee than the Target card. I’d gladly take the higher fee because Target is not as convenient for me in the New York metro area. There are far more college affiliated Barnes and Noble than Target. All CUNY and SUNY schools as well as many private schools use Barnes and Noble.
how about this card? I’m maxing out BB so wanted another card to load. It accepts VR but not sure how to unload it. Didn’t want to try serve as I already have BB. https://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/prepaid/american-express-prepaid-card/home.html
I’ve seen that card float around a bit, TopCashBack once had $10 to sign up, but that seems to be gone.
As far as that product, you should read this thread and ask amolkold any questions you may have.
