A couple of months ago, MyPoints redesigned their website. Unfortunately, I don’t have a screenshot of what the old website, but here’s a snapshot of what it is now.
Their old website definitely was antiquated looking and made things tough to find. The new website is very graphical and easy on the eyes. There used to be a textual list of items that you could redeem your MyPoints, but now everything looks much better.
Shopping Cart Trick:
I first learned about the Shopping Cart trick from Personal Finance Digest. Be sure to read the post to understand the premise behind the trick. Doctor of Credit also has an up to date post regarding the trick as well.
Since I was a MyPoints member and I had seen they had a Comenity cobranded credit card, I wanted to try out the shopping cart trick. For MyPoints, there is no ‘shopping cart’ for the preapproved offer. I don’t remember where I saw it, and wouldn’t mind some reader’s help for the source. What you do for MyPoints is fill out all of your personal information. Just like that, I received preapproved credit card offers since December:
I even received a letter from Comenity bank telling me I only have 60 days to accept the offer. When I attempt to sign up for the credit card, the links provided in the letter and email are all dead. Doctor of Credit does a solid job of reaching out to all of the banking representatives on comments and further information about any financial product. While not quite on the same level, I reached out to MyPoints regarding their credit card about the dead links and they came back with this:
We apologize for any inconvenience caused to you.
Currently the new MyPoints Rewards Visa is being tested by a small group of members. In the meantime you can update your account information (i.e. mailing address, phone number etc.) which may help you become a test member in the coming months.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to respond to this email.
I’m excited, I can’t wait to see what comes out for a credit card without a hard pull. I think the MyPoints credit card out of all the ones available for the shopping cart trick is the only one worth while since it’s non denominated store card and currently has 2x on gas and groceries, but we’ll have to see what the new card will be like.
Looks like the points are just worth 2/3 or so. So 2x would only get you 1.3. Am I missing something?
Very astute observation, Chuck! You are correct. There used to be a time when they had Marriott gift cards you could redeem the MyPoints for at a decent rate, but that option is no longer available. Now the best option would be to redeem MyPoints for United Airline miles. It’s approximately 1 MyPoint for .42 UA mile.
I’m hoping after the pilot period the card becomes better and we can use the MyPoints card w/o a hard pull and indirectly MS into UA miles at a good rate.
