My friend approached me the other day to ask me what credit card to recommend.
The categories I found out with the most spend:
- Dining out
- Groceries
- Department store shopping
- Transportation/Travel
Perks:
- Cash back
- Travel
- Points that don’t expire
Immediately, my first thought was Chase Sapphire Preferred because of the commuting costs and dining out and the perks that she asked about because of the flexibility the Ultimate Rewards offers. For the all other categories, the Sapphire Preferred is lacking.
Below is a simple scenario
After compiling the spreadsheet, I thought about it some more and her best opportunity would be a card that has the quarterly bonuses of 5% back like the Chase Freedom with Exclusives, Citi Dividend Platinum Select, or Discover® More Card. I calculated my spreadsheet at 1% therefore, those numbers on are the lower side while the Sapphire Preferred was calculated higher.
