I had written about how Discover is quite generous with their rewards, and I thought Discover’s 5% online shopping would be the same, but I guessed wrong.
The 5% cash back for online purchases must be categorized as “merchandise” by Discover in order to receive 5% back. My purchases from Living Social and a Discover gift card were credited 1% instead of a 5% online purchases. Everything else was eligible for the 5%
Walmart and the lines blanked out totaled $888.26 and dividing the cashback received of $44.42 by .05 the quotient is $888.4 so those numbers line up.
The everything else cash back is $5.28 and that’s the Discover Gift Card and Living Social total of $528.95 which also line up.
I already drained the Discover gift card through Amazon Payments, but I think that the Discover gift card would have a PIN since the home improvement gift cards run on the Discover network and had a PIN. Discover gift cards can only be purchased with a Discover card for a $3.95 fee.
Why don’t you just use Amazon Payment?
Great question. Last year, I did Amazon Payments. This year, I am trying to spend $30,000 on my American Express SPG credit card for gold status so I am locked out of AP.
