Marriott Rewards Members: A Birthday Surprise awaits

May 3, 2018 By Trevor 4 Comments

Mark this under Speculative, but Marriott is sending out e-mails to Marriott Rewards enticing Marriott Rewards Members to add their birthdays. This is a quick way to possible increase your points balance, or otherwise see what Marriott’s proposed birthday surprise is.

Marriott Rewards Members

Add your Birthday to your Marriott Rewards Account

Adding your birthday to your Marriott Rewards account is actually really quick and easy. You can click on the link in the e-mail, or go here, sign in, and you’ll arrive at the below screen. Marriott only wants to know your birth month and birth day, so anyone who’s nervous about Marriott knowing your age – you needn’t worry.

Marriott Rewards Members

There’s no telling what Marriott will be giving Marriott Rewards Members on their birthdays, but, if I had to guess, it’d probably be points. Besides, who doesn’t like points?

Marriott Likes to give Marriott Rewards Members Points

This is yet another in a long line of nice gestures for Marriott Rewards. Earlier this year, they sent me a nice tweet and gave me 500 points. Not huge, but its the thought that counts:

Marriott Rewards Members

Overall, this isn’t going to be a game changer, but its another example of Marriott doing the right thing. Small gestures–500 points for example doesn’t really move the needle–that don’t cost the company much, helps members to feel appreciated, and to continue to patronage Marriott hotels. Its kind of like how American used to deposit some miles into members accounts after you did a redemption, as a way to keep you engaged in the program.

Did you receive an e-mail invitation to add your birthday to your Marriott Rewards account?

My crazy 2018 loyalty goal

February 15, 2018 By Trevor 6 Comments

I’ve learned over the years that goals are integral for me. They help me to push myself to always improve. I set some to challenge my abilities, and some are just fun. My crazy 2018 loyalty goal is one that covers the latter two categories. It will take ingenuity, but its a fun one to have.

My Crazy 2018 Loyalty Goal

I’ve long talked about Lifetime Status with any loyalty program. In fact I posed the Lifetime Hotel Status Conundrum last year when my friend Ed attained lifetime Hyatt Globalist status. Well, with all the changes happening to Marriott and SPG, I feel like I should push for lifetime status now before even more changes. Here’s where I stand at present:

Current Marriott Lifetime Status positions.

Here is what you need with respect to points and elite qualifying nights to achieve various status levels.

Marriott Lifetime Status thresholds.

You’ll see that based on my current status, I’m 99 nights 662,410 Marriott Points away from attaining Lifetime Platinum Elite.

My strategy toward Lifetime Marriott Platinum Elite

I’m still forming my overall strategy, but the biggest challenge is those 662,410 Marriott Points. Elite Qualifying Nights (EQN) are easy compared. So some options I’m looking at are:

  • Sharing my referral link for the Personal Marriott Rewards Visa – you can get 75,000 points after $3,000 spend. Note this can earn up to 100,000 points if 5 folks choose to sign up (Thank You, if you do!)
  • Leverage some of the new Marriott Credit Cards from AMEX or Chase.
    • To be safe, given the Chase shutdowns, I’m going to focus more on the AMEX side, once those cards are released.
  • Re-introduce my Marriott Business Visa into my Reselling Credit Card stack, But again, I want to be cautious not to increase spend too quickly.
  • Leverage the various Marriott Megabonus promotions.

What am I missing?

I realize this is a crazy idea. Its irrational. I get that. But, I suspect it’ll be fun in the process of attempting to get their!

I’m sure that I’m missing some opportunities to generate Marriott Points. So, what am I missing?

Dual Door Deplaning, British Airways’ IT Outage, Losing Global Entry, Tons of Southwest!

Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know.

Travel:

  • Last weekend British Airways became the latest airline to have a colossal IT failure. Seth Miller for Runway Girl Network covers some of the compounding mis-steps that BA made during that outage.
  • Southwest and reportedly Alaska are testing out dual door deplaning. It’s a great idea. I wish it were feasible everywhere.
  • Two business travellers, one with status, one with out. Ed calls it: The Hunger Games. I think that’s a pretty good approximation.
  • A fellow blogger got his Global Entry revoked, and you’ll never guess why. I personally find it appalling.

Miles, Points, Cashback:

  • Plastiq continues to present a lot of interesting opportunities.
  • If you’re looking for that Companion Pass and missed out on previous opportunities, there are a few Chase Southwest credit cards that have sign-up bonuses of 60,000.
  • Gary Leff reports that promo awards are released for Air France/KLM’s Flying Blue Program.

New Marriott Rewards Credit Card Apple Pay Promotion

June 1, 2017 By Trevor 1 Comment

I don’t usually get excited about small credit card offers like this, but, its not very often we see something for the Marriott Credit Card. This isn’t nearly as good as the Discover Apple Pay promotion a few years back–which I bought an iPhone for by the way!

Marriott Rewards Credit Card, Apple Pay Promotion

Marriott Rewards Credit Card Apple Pay promotion

The promotion is pretty simple – use Apple Pay to make 5 purchases with your Marriott Rewards Credit Card between 15 May and 15 June and you’ll get a $15 statement credit.

The terms are fairly straight forward, see pasted below:

Offer: This offer is valid from 05/15/2017 through 06/15/2017. To qualify for this offer, you must make 5 transactions using your consumer Marriott Rewards® credit card with your Apple Pay® account during checkout. Purchases are when you, or an authorized user, use a card to make purchases of products and services, minus returns or refunds. Please allow up to 8 weeks after the qualifying purchase(s) post(s) to your account for the statement credit to post to your Marriott Rewards® credit account. To receive the statement credit, your account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. If you change your credit card product during the promotional period you will forfeit this offer. This offer is non-transferable. Limit one statement credit per customer or card account. Chase may terminate this offer at any time without notice.

It seems like a pretty easy promotion to do in order to get yourself a $15 statement credit. One caveat – its not clear to me that it is specifically targeted.

Will you be taking advantage of the Marriott Rewards Credit Card Apple Pay promotion?

Marriott-SPG Program Future, Emirates, Second City Travel, Chase Sapphire Reserve

September 23, 2016 By Trevor 1 Comment

The Weekly News Roundup is a collection of headlines from around the internet that caught the attention of the Tagging Miles team. Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know.

Travel:

  • Second City Travel – a cool concept, and important to remember. My favorite second city is Melbourne, Australia, but there are so many other great ones across the world!
Black Market Cigars in Santa Clara, Cuba.
  • Southwest has introduced a standby benefit, but it is so restrictive, that except for a small subset of flights, its not terribly useful. The two most restrictive components: Standby must be requested at the airport, and must be within 2 hours of original flight.
  • H/T to Gary for this one – insightful interview of the CEO of Emirates.
  • A video blogger experiences Emirates First Class for the first time. check out the video, its a fun watch!
  • The worlds shortest international flight – traffic must be horrible, if folks would rather fly 12 miles!

Miles and Points

  • The biggest news in the miles and points world this week was the Marriott-SPG Merger being finalized, and the future of Marriott Rewards and SPG. The news is fairly positive in that SPG points will transferred at 3 Marriott Rewards Points per SPG, however, I’m concerned that the likelihood of SPG awards being tripled is on the horizon.
  • Seth highlights United’s funky award pricing, and how things will, unfortunately get worse in October.
  • Joe opines on a humorous few blog posts from one of the “titans.” Its good if you need a laugh on your Friday morning!
  • No more ebay bucks on gift card purchases starting in October.
  • From Business Week (H/T Vinh) an interesting read on the Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR). The analysis is similar to what we’ve seen elsewhere, being the CSR is more rewarding. The thing that is less clear, is how Chase is making this card a profit maker, the implication is that it is through interchange fees, but, I’m skeptical.

Tagging Miles

  • More changes to Fulfillment by Amazon Storage Fees – No more exemption for a single unit of inventory.
  • Thoughts from Reselling DO 3 – and a sneak peak for Reselling DO 4.
  • Tales from Seat 28B – yes, I did actually fly economy!

Enhanced Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card

May 19, 2016 By Trevor 6 Comments

As long time readers know, I’m a Marriott fan, despite calling it the red-headed step child of the miles and points game. That post was more talking about the personal version of the Marriott Rewards Premier Card, but the fact remains that day to day spend is kind’ve weak. Marriott and Chase are doing something to enhance the return with the Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card, it doesn’t fix the poor redemption rate of Marriott’s award chart, but it helps.

Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card

Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card

Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card Enhancements

The bigger deal is that there is now a better path to spend your way to status with Marriott. Spend $50,000 dollars in a single year, and you’ll earn Gold Status. Here’s more detail from Marriott:

New Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card benefits

New Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card benefits

First off, before you get too excited, Marriott Rewards Gold Elite status is middle tier. You get most of the good stuff, but you’re not at the top of the pecking order (Platinum) so to speak (in fact, there’s a fourth less documented level higher than Platinum status). To get Gold status through stays, you would have to stay 50 nights. The personal card has a similar option, however you get 1 Elite Night per $3,000 spend, so you don’t have to go all or nothing – but you’d also have to spend 3x as much.

Here’s a summary of the three documented levels, so you can see the differences:

Marriott Rewards Elite Status Levels and Perks

Marriott Rewards Elite Status Levels and Perks

The other new benefit is that you can now save with Visa Savings Edge. It’s not terribly exciting, mostly 1-4% savings, but, every penny helps, right?

Wrapping Up

Is this enhancement really amazing? Not really. But, for those folks with the Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card, that are putting heavy spend on it, it is a nice benefit. Is it worth moving spend from more lucrative cards, like the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) business card? I doubt it. But, at least Chase and Marriott are trying to improve the attractiveness of the card. Really, the best way to make day to day spend on any Marriott card, is to either (1) revise the award chart or (2) enhance the amount earned per dollar spent. Wishful thinking.

Marriott announces deal to buy Starwood Hotels and Resorts

November 16, 2015 By Trevor Leave a Comment

Marriott and SPG

Early this morning, Marriott announced that it would buy Starwood Hotels and Resorts. The deal, which has Marriott paying $12.2B in cash and stock, will create the largest hotel chain in the world.

The Tale of Two Loyalty Programs

This has the potential to be huge for hotel mile and point collectors. Here you have on of the strongest point currencies in Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG). They’re transferable to so many different programs with a 25% bonus when you transfer in increments of 20,000 points, so much to the point that there are SPG points hoarders (heck, I’m one of them, having been sitting on 200k for a while). But SPG points aren’t just valuable for transferring to partners like Alaska Airlines, they’re also super valuable for use at Starwood hotels as Points and Cash rates.

SPG Points and Cash

Pretty huge, if you ask me, much better than anyone else, including Hyatt, which is pretty good, in my opinion.

On the other side you have Marriott Rewards. Last year, I posed the question: Is Marriott the Red Headed Stepchild? Perhaps the most meaningful part of posing that question on Twitter, was this response from Gary Leff:

Big hotel chains don’t need to be rewarding, smaller chains must be more rewarding.

That part scares me, because, Marriott is going to go from a big hotel chain, to the biggest.

But, Marriott Rewards actually does have a strength. Its the Vacation Awards you can get, if you can accrue enough points. This is where you get a 7 night certificate, and transfer a number of points to the mileage program of your choice, see the options below:

Marriott's Hotel + Air Packages, book 7 award nights at a Marriott and get 50,000-132,000 miles!

Marriott’s Hotel + Air Packages, book 7 award nights at a Marriott and get 50,000-132,000 miles!

Wrapping Up

The deal won’t close until mid-2016, so there is still time, if you’ve been hoarding your SPG points, or if you’ve been saving up for the Marriott Rewards Vacation option. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I’d say that those areas where we see the greatest value, e.g. Transferring to a ton of partners with a 25% bonus when you transfer in increments of 20,000 points. I wouldn’t be surprised to see those transfer partners change. The biggest question for me though is, the scale. Both rewards programs are vastly different in their redemption scales. Which one wins?

Marriott Rewards Enhancements – The Fabulous Four

October 16, 2015 By Trevor 3 Comments

Marriott Rewards Enhancements

Marriott Rewards recently released enhancements, and I’m really going to call them enhancements… Heck, I’m not even sure if Marriott called them enhancements, but by golly they are!

Others have written about these Marriott Rewards enhancements, and normally, I’ll leave it to the more mainstream bloggers, but I’m a Marriott guy. When most folks scoff at Marriott because of their 75 night requirement for top tier status, I actually do it. I’ve shared my thoughts of Marriott before, such as, questioning whether Marriott was the red headed stepchild, I’ve also shared a collection of Marriott promotions, policy changes, and other initiatives, not to mention having reviewed a ton of Marriott hotels, including JW Khao Lak, Cairo Marriott, The Doha Marriott, Renaissance Seoul, Renaissance Bangkok, and the list goes on. All that, to say that Marriott has made some positive changes for those Marriott loyalists, and, those that aren’t, I’d recommend you take notice.

Marriott is calling this the Fabulous Four, why? Because they’ve got four enhancements that are just fabulous!

Marriott Rewards Enhancements2

Lets break each one out on its own, because just like the Fantastic Four, each of the Fabulous Four has its own personality.

Marriott Rewards Enhancement: The NEW Cash + Points

Marriott Rewards Enhancements3

Marriott had previously introduced a similar feature, however this is the new version. First, here’s the good news, the NEW Rewards cash + points chart for both Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels:

Marriott Rewards Enhancements4

Now here’s the bad news:

  • It doesn’t start until sometime in 2016.
  • Like other hotel programs, Participation will vary by hotel
  • You will not earn points on the cash portion of the new cash + points
  • The new cash + points will not count toward “redeem 4 nights, get the 5th night free.”

Here’s the good news:

  • Cash + Points rates will not fluctuate, they will be consistent with hotel categories (similar to other programs)
  • You will finally earn elite night credits with the new cash + points.

Marriott Rewards Enhancement: Redemption Stay Credit

Marriott Rewards Enhancements5

This is a simple one: Starting November 1, 2015, you will earn Elite nights credits for award redemptions aka stays using points! For me, this is pretty huge, as I recently stayed two nights in Singapore on points. Alas, I was like 45 days early on this one, but seriously, this is, in my opinion, a big deal!

Marriott Rewards Enhancement: Points Sharing

Marriott Rewards Enhancements6

You will be able to share your Marriott Rewards points with any other Marriott Rewards member you want, however, only up to 50,000 points per year. There are unfortunately some terms and conditions, quoted below:

  1. This Member benefit is available between any two accounts in good standing whether sending or receiving points. A Member may authorize the transfer a maximum of 50,000 Points per calendar year into the Rewards Program account of friends or family provided the recipient account is also in good standing. Once per calendar year and only at time of Reward Redemption a Member may exceed the 50,000 Point maximum into the Rewards Program account of a friend or family member in order to qualify for a specific Reward in accordance with this section.
  2. Immediately prior to Reward Redemption and only once per calendar year, a Member may authorize the transfer of the necessary number of Points into the Rewards Program account of a friend or family member, in order to qualify for a specific Reward. This transfer may exceed the 50,000 Point maximum per calendar year.
  3. In the instance of transfer exceeding the 50,000 Point maximum only the necessary number of Points needed to redeem the specified Reward, rounded to the nearest 1,000 Points, may be transferred — no more, no less.
  4. Authorization to transfer Points must be initiated by the account holder with the Points to be transferred by contacting Rewards Program Guest Services by calling Rewards Program Guest Services at 1-801-468-4000 (Marriott Rewards Program) or 1-866-922-6882 (The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Program). The account holder requesting the transfer must provide the Marriott Rewards account number of the Points recipient at the time of the Point transfer request.
  5. Once the authorization for transfer is received and processed, the transferee relinquishes all rights to the transferred Points, and they become the recipient’s Points.

Looking at the above terms, it looks like there is a once per calendar year opportunity to exceed the 50,000 point maximum to transfer to a friend or family member (interesting that friends are before family, but I digress). This could turn out to be a huge point, I think.

Marriott Rewards Enhancement: Points Advance

Marriott Rewards Enhancements7

While a points advance was a previously unadvertised benefit, it is nice to see that Marriott is advertising it now as a public benefit. So many times, people don’t bother to ask, as I mentioned in a previous weekly post, if you don’t ask, you don’t know.

Of course there is more to this, you can find the terms and conditions, however I’ll summarize below.

  • You need to purchase, receive from a friend, or accrue the necessary points 14 days in advance.

It looks like the other terms and conditions that follow are more high level terms, or requirements that relate to non-points advance reservations/redemptions.

Wrapping Up

Overall, I think Marriott’s Rewards Enhancements are truly enhancements. For me, the biggest two are (1) cash + points earning elite night credit, and (2) redemption stays earning elite credits. Obviously I’m a minority, in that I strive for Marriott Rewards Platinum status each year, but even those that strive for Marriott Rewards Gold status can benefit from these wonderful enhancements. Perhaps this doesn’t make Marriott as competitive as programs such as Hyatt’s Gold Passport, or Starwood Preferred Guest, but it at least shows that Marriott Rewards is in fact trying. For that, I salute them.

Register now before you forget: Marriott Rewards MegaBonus

December 18, 2014 By Trevor Leave a Comment

MarriottMegaBonus

Marriott released their MegaBonus promotion for stays between February 1 through April 30, 2015. More on why I’m bolding “stays” further down, but the offers generally vary, but here’s what I got:

My Marriott MegaBonus Offer from 1 Feb to 30 April 2015.

My Marriott MegaBonus Offer from 1 Feb to 30 April 2015.

For me, its not the best I’ve seen, but, it could be meaningful. Note that this awards 2,500 points per stay. Meaning that you could earn the entire bonus after only 11 stays. Previous bonuses offered a two tier reward. For example here is what I had last during Marriott’s last MegaBonus period (that ends 1/15/15):

My MegaBonus offer from 15 September 2014 through 15 January 2015.

My MegaBonus offer from 15 September 2014 through 15 January 2015.

For example, I’m not going to make it to 15 paid nights, meaning regardless of my 8 nights, I’ll earn no points. I can tell you that those 8 nights were based on 2 stays, so under the new promotion, I would earn 2,500 Marriott Reward points. Its not much, but its certainly more than the zero I’ll get from the current promotion.

Is this an indication that Marriott is changing focus?

I could be reading too much into this, but right now Marriott has the highest requirements for top tier elites–75 nights–with no option for fewer stays to attain top tier status. Historically, at least I can’t recall Marriott paying a whole lot of attention to stays. Its always been nights. The question I would pose: Is Marriott “waking up” and realizing that they need to at least give credit to the road warriors who stay frequently but may not rack up 75 nights?

Wrapping Up

Everyone travels differently, but if you are more the type that stays a single night (whether for business or pleasure) at a time, this Marriott MegaBonus is for you. As far as the bigger question about Marriott’s focus — are they shifting to recognizing stays in addition to nights — I think only time will tell.

NFL Game Day Packages for Marriott Rewards’ Flash Perks 21 August 14

August 21, 2014 By Trevor 1 Comment

Marriott Rewards Flash Perks

Marriott Rewards Flash Perks

Right on the tail of yesterday’s post asking if Marriott Rewards was the red headed stepchild of hotel points and elite seekers, reader TJ mentioned IHG’s point’s breaks nights, which brought to mind Marriott Rewards’ new Flash Perks program

Magic of Miles broke this story last month, but I guess I missed it until now. Marriott Rewards launched a 12-week promotion called Flash Perks on 17 July. The program is in its first few weeks caught my eye, with 50% discounts on award redemptions at the JW Marriott Hong Kong, and the Marriott Circular Quay. Both hotels are category 8’s that regularly go for 40k Marriott Rewards points. I’ve had the chance to stay at both, and would highly recommend them.

You can check out the main Flash Perks landing page, although it won’t show the latest deals until 12 noon CT. Because of my day job, I’m writing this the night before so I don’t have access to the deals, but wanted to give folks the sooner an early heads up.

I’ll update this post Thursday evening with what the Flash Perks are for this week.

Update

Marriott Rewards' Flash Perk deal for 21 August 14 - NFL Game Day Packages

Marriott Rewards’ Flash Perk deal for 21 August 14 – NFL Game Day Packages

So, this week is primarily Courtyard by Marriott properties, but with a twist, included in two nights at a Courtyard are 2 tickets to the game (that’s really what you’re choosing here), a $100 Southwest gift card, and $25 Courtyard gift card. The terms are below:

Marriott Rewards Flash Perks 21 August 14 NFL Game Day Package Example.

Marriott Rewards Flash Perks 21 August 14 NFL Game Day Package Example.

Its not as lucrative as some of those in the past (at least to me). The offers vary in price, for example, this Cleveland Browns at the Pittsburgh Steeler’s package is $276 a night at the Courtyard Pittsburgh Airport Settler’s Ridge.

Cleveland Browns at the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh 7 September 14 example Marriott NFL Game Day Package.

Cleveland Browns at the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh 7 September 14 example Marriott NFL Game Day Package.

A quick spot check shows anywhere from $250-$470 a night. Probably pretty cool if you’re an NFL football fan though!
