  • FlyDubai and Emirates coordinating.

  • American Airlines celebrated a very special 75th anniversary this week.

Travel on Saudia during Ramadan, JetBlue’s Utripping, Fairmont CC

Travel:

  • Lucky shares insights from flying Saudia during Ramadan. It is certainly an interesting experience it sounds like.
  • Michael shares a much more affordable option to the bridge climb.
  • Disney’s new Pandora sounds pretty impressive. Will you be visiting?
  • JetBlue working with Utrip is bringing a new level to vacation bookings. The best part? It’s not just focused on the sale, but in some cases even providing recommendations.
  • Marriott introduces punitive cancellation policies that are almost as bad as Hyatt’s Award Cancellation and No Show Policy.

Miles and Points:

  • From Doctor of Credit – Citi Thank You Points has a transfer bonus of 10% – transfer by 5 July. Not as nice as American Express’s 25% transfer bonus to Hawaiian Airlines, but infinitely more usable I’d say.
  • Travel is Free put together the AA Award Chart in an easy to understand fashion (unlike aa.com).

747 Refresh, Premium Travel Card Madness, Milwaukee

Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know.

Travel:

  • The Queen of the Sky is still getting the occasional cabin refresh – in this case, one of Qantas’ 2 remaining 747’s got a sporty new look!
  • There’s a new credit card out (maybe you’ve heard about it ), and Joe has an alternative view on Premium Travel Cards.
  • Always garden your reservation, to avoid nasty surprises like P.F. Digest found.
  • Travel to Milwaukee – the hidden city of cool things to see and do. So many of them sound like great ideas, like kayaking to a brewery and hammerschlagen!
  • If you were crediting your American Airlines flights to Cathay Pacific, it’s just not as rewarding as it used to be. But View from the Wing has some other options for you.
  • Airlines are announcing in droves tighter pitches in Economy. American first, United is considering the same on their 737MAX. More important than the pitch though are the questions that Seth raises with respect to the impact on loyalty. Of course the Basic Economy fares don’t help that discussion either.

Electronics Ban, 2.5% Cashback is the new floor, Farewell to Virgin America

March 24, 2017 By Trevor 5 Comments

The Weekly Travel News Roundup is a collection of headlines from around the internet that caught the attention of the Tagging Miles team. Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know.

Travel and The Electronics Ban:

  • The biggest news is the electronics ban (my link), which has the US and UK banning large electronics from the cabin for flights departing from a variety of Middle East and North African airports. Airlines are already hurting, and trying to alleviate the inconvenience, like Emirates who will allow passengers to keep their electronics right up until boarding.
  • Richard Branson’s farewell to Virgin America, after Alaska announced it will kill the Virgin America brand, is a great, if nostalgic read. I have to say, there have been some airlines that really have character, and Virgin America is one of them. There aren’t that many left. And if you want a parody from another era, here is singleflyer’s offering
  • Dia succeeded in getting her jump to Marriott Rewards Platinum, which gets her United Silver and a bunch of other benefits. Have you jumped on this yet? If you have SPG or Marriott Gold, its a phone call, and 9 stays in 3 months. I’m 2 stays in myself.

Credit & Gift Cards and Miles and Points:

  • Joe has a public service announcement – always keep your receipts when buying gift cards!
  • Cashback Credit Cards are getting more competitive, check out this 3% cashback in the first year card coming soon nationwide. Or, USAA also has a 2.5% cashback card. No longer is the “floor” 2%.
  • Ya’ll know I love shopping portals – well Doctor of Credit shares a way to get even more miles when shopping via the AAdvantage Shopping Portal.

Tagging Miles Posts of the Week:

  • Changes coming to Washington’s Reagan National Airport
  • Electronics Ban for flights from 8 Countries
  • Networking is Key for Travel Hacking!
  • Is the Electronics Ban the next volley in US3 vs ME3 airlines?
  • Finally, I tried looking for a silver lining of the Electronics Ban, as any good travel hacker should!

Travel on United’s new Polaris, AirAsiaX coming to America, FT4RL6 Speakers

February 17, 2017 By Trevor Leave a Comment

The Weekly Travel News Roundup is a collection of headlines from around the internet that caught the attention of the Tagging Miles team. Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know.

Travel:

  • Where to sit on United‘s new Polaris 777-300ER
  • Great news for Hawaii, AirAsiaX has received permission to fly to the US and Hawaii is where the fun is starting! I can’t think of a market that can use the competition more, other than maybe direct US to the South Pacific.
  • Everyone loves Disney, and I’m sure everyone who’s been to a Disney Park has enjoyed the evening fireworks display, but have you ever wondered how much that costs?
  • Here’s another look onboard the United 778-300ER with the new Polaris seat and service.. now if only we could obtain one of those cute Polaris Bears!

Credit Cards:

  • As credit cards for US airlines are increasingly becoming harder to churn or even get, it is logical to start looking outside of the US. Doctor of Credit writes about a new Cathay Pacific credit card.
  • In fact, Frequent Miler might have found a pretty meaningful reason to consider that Cathay Pacific Credit card, too!

Miles and Points:

  • Dia has announced the speakers for FT4RL6, and she doesn’t disappoint, there are many new speakers.

Virgin-Alaska, Barclaycard shutdowns, airline rule changes, 90 Years of United Airlines

April 8, 2016 By Trevor 1 Comment

The Weekly News Roundup is a collection of headlines from around the internet that caught the attention of the Tagging Miles team. Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know!

Travel:

  • Not all travel is in First Class, at 5 star hotels, and without issue. Stefan shares how he was robbed on Easter.
  • Australian Business Traveller reports that Singapore will have a new business class seat for their 787-10 and A350 aircraft, coming in 2018.
  • John Walton writing for Runway Girl Network, poses the Virgin-Alaska tie-up’s premium Passenger Experience (#PaxEx) opportunity. John’s comments are a bit ironic, considering Gary Leff’s comment that Virgin America has the best domestic First Class cabin.
  • And speaking of the Virgin-Alaska tie-up, Ed shares the key business points behind it.
  • Jason Rabinowitz reviews China Eastern’s 777-300ER. This is not your typical flight review, definitely a worthwhile read.
  • From Scott Mayerowitz, more publicity on an airline rule change that will make your multi-city flight cost significantly more, if you book as a single ticket. So, take this advice from Gary Leff instead.

Miles and Points:

  • Stefan poses a well thought out and researched question, asking whether customers who buy miles are a better customer than the ones who fly on the airlines (as a method to earn miles).
  • With many avenues of MS closing, more folks are getting money orders. Vinh has a cautionary tale that struck a chord for me. Always make sure the money order prints out the full dollar value and the full date, otherwise you’ll encounter issues depositing it.
  • Milenomics declares miles are dead.
  • In the same topic as Milenomics, Keri reports that the Verizon Rewards Plus Points have also devalued this week. Not a big deal, but, it speaks to the trend.
  • Vinh reports on Barclaycard shutdowns. Interesting, considering I haven’t even been looking at my Barclaycard stuff lately.

The best domestic first class product, blindspots in miles and points, the possibilities in MS and Reselling

March 18, 2016 By Trevor Leave a Comment

Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know!

Travel:

  • Gary shares that Virgin America’s offering is actually pretty good. He says “the very best domestic first class product.” It looks to me like the seat itself is reminiscent of Singapore’s Silk Air regional first class seat, which definitely would be appreciated on those non-A321T transcons.
  • More bag fees for the more expensive tickets.

Miles and Points:

  • The trio known as Dem Flyers, poses with their favorite credit cards. Which one is your favorite?
  • As the Joe Flies asks the question – what is your blindspot? It’s pretty clear that Delta is probably mine, so much so that I don’t even have many points that could be used toward a Delta award–I’m not big on Membership Rewards points either.
  • Vinh of Miles per Day shows the art of the possible when it comes to manufactured spending and reselling.
  • Gary reports that Alaska is unlikely to move away from mileage earning (e.g. to revenue based earning like AA, UA, DL).
  • Seth talks about Reward Diversity Growing in Significance for Airlines and Hotels.

Gogo lawsuit, Paid Time Off, Upgrade your suitcase and help others (at the same time), The Freddie Awards

February 19, 2016 By Trevor Leave a Comment

The Weekly News Roundup is a collection of headlines from around the internet that caught the attention of the Tagging Miles team. Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know!

Travel:

  • Mike, writing for One Mile at a Time, shares a little rant about US Paid Time Off (PTO) policies. I can’t say I disagree with him. Its pretty bad, I’m lucky that my employer is very understanding and much more generous than most, but for many Americans, it’s either very stringent, or vacations are few and far between.
  • With the US and Cuba officially signing the agreement today, airlines can now bid to offer commercial service. Who will fly from where, and how frequently? All things we won’t know until March, but that’s only a few weeks away.
  • Ed reports that you can get $100 off a new Briggs and Riley bag (which is my favorite carry-on, btw), and you can help out a great cause at the same time. If you’re in the market for a new bag, this is a chance to save some money and do some good.

Miles and Points:

  • Gary Leff reports that voting for the Freddie Awards has opened! The Freddies are an important award, at least in my book, because they are voted on by frequent travelers, people like us. Please take the time to vote.
  • Buy Visa Gift Cards Online, from Loophole Travel

Reselling:

  • Miles per Day shares how a reader got his Staples rewards account shutdown. Clearly people maximize coupons much more than I do, because while I have known about buying coupons on Ebay, I have not once actually thought about doing it…. and after reading this, that thought is even farther from my mind.
  • From InventoryLab’s changelog:

Whoever keeps ripping a hole in the Space-Time Continuum better knock it off! We had folks with 6-day long weeks showing in their weekly Profit & Loss Reports! Thankfully, our Developers were able to stitch this new one up, but we’ve had it up to our eyeballs with these shenanigans! A tiny rip today is a Worm Hole tomorrow, and then what are you gonna do?! It’s all fun and games until you cause infinite quantum uncertainty.

Nonsequitar:

  • American Airlines files suit against Gogo as the in-flight connectivity playing field sees more competitive, better wifi.

Traveling healthy, Giveaways to enter, Manufactured Spend and this thing called Structuring

January 29, 2016 By Trevor Leave a Comment

The Weekly News Roundup is a collection of headlines from around the internet that caught the attention of the Tagging Miles team. Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know!

Do This Now:

  • If you haven’t already entered Gary Leff’s giveaway, do so now. He’s giving away two nights at the Al Maha in UAE. Its a beautiful SPG property, that I’d love to visit myself.
  • Seth, the Wandering Aramean is also holding a giveaway for fun #avgeek swag.

Travel:

  • Mrs. Pizza in Motion shares ways to combat sickness when traveling. She says it isn’t the recycled air that gets you sick (which makes sense).
  • Gary shares some advice on how to sleep well on short flights and beat jet lag. The only thing I disagree with him on is that I tend to have less trouble going to Asia than I do to Europe. For me, the longer 14 hour flights help with transitioning to a different timezone, as there is enough time to sleep and eat, vice shorter flights (even when skipping breakfast).
  • Seth reports that United will re-link the US with Singapore. This is huge, as Singapore Airlines had previously expressed an interest in re-starting SIN-LAX and SIN-NYC flights, to see United doing it from SFO (where Singapore Airlines flies, but with a stop in Hong Kong), its interesting. But I still feel bad for anyone flying that, given that even in “Business-First” with that B/E Aerospace seat, is, in my opinion, anything but comfortable.
  • Point Hacks reports Apple Pay in Australia now works. Of course Discover’s great deal is done (and I’m not even sure it would’ve made sense), but, there are bound to be other promotions in the future, so bookmark this one.

Miles and Points:

  • PF Digest in his typical “the world is over” fashion (I mean this, tongue in cheek of course), shares another data point on how over-exposure kills, and how our “hobby” is much bigger and much more public now than ever before.
  • Frequent Miler shares his Winter 2016 approach to manufactured spending. He also published a Manufacturing Spend through Reselling guide (authored by yours truly).
  • Chasing the Points shares how a Photo Booth business has a lot in common with Manufactured Spending. Its an interesting perspective, and really MS has much in common with many businesses.
  • I realize I’m citing a bunch of PF Digest this week. But, this one really got under my skin. A bunch of us, not just Saverocity Bloggers (but, lets be honest, we’re pretty knowledgeable on this stuff) saw a particular blog post and took issue. PF Digest–caught the short straw (kidding– I’m sure he wrote it up, because it is important). Anyone can have a blog. But there is a level of responsibility in blogging, and advocating tactics that look a lot like committing a crime, is well, frowned upon. Succinctly: Manufactured Spending is perfectly legal; Structuring deposits to avoid reporting is quite the opposite.
  • Milenerd got in on the structuring debate. The good news is, everyone is pretty consistent – Just Don’t Do It.

Non Sequitar:

  • Iran Air is going on a shopping spree, including some A380’s. But I’m not sure I’d hold your breath.
  • Turkish unveiled a special Batman vs Superman livery, check it out!
  • Alaska Airlines’ got a new look, and it’s pretty sweet! Albeit, not a big change.

Happy New Year, Travel Questions, Killing the Golden Goose, Looking back at 2015 and forward to 2016.

Happy New Year!!

The Weekly News Roundup is a collection of headlines from around the internet that caught the attention of the Tagging Miles team. Content on these blogs do not necessarily reflect the positions of Tagging Miles, and should not be considered endorsements. Have a great story we should read? Contact us now and let us know!

Travel:

  • From USA Today – The German Court has ruled against Etihad and Air Berlin codeshares. This is unfortunate, as it impacts a number of routes, and is part of Etihad’s Partnership strategy
  • Kat shares a start-up firm offering essentially day rooms. Hotel by Day. It’s an interesting business model that could work for folks with long layovers that want to get out, explore the city, but maybe not the entire time.

Miles and Points:

  • Gary Leff is answering travel questions. I always find it interesting to read through the comments. There are some particularly insightful answers.
  • Lucky asks whether Airlines are killing the Golden Goose. It’s an interesting argument.
  • Marshall Jackson shares his perspective on Airline Loyalty in 2016. It is an interesting read. I suspect the comments will provide some further color to the topic.
  • Joe shares deep thoughts on expensive hot cocoa and ice skating, which makes me think of a a post earlier this month by Matt, about how spending money is hard.

Reselling:

  • Oren shares his 2015 year in review. I think he highlights a lot of things, at at least one of the reasons I seldom share deals on TaggingMiles. Definitely for me, I try to share information and teach folks to fish.

#AvGeek:

  • Just in case you missed it, earlier this year, Air Koryo’s flight attendants upgraded their uniforms.
  • And if you got a drone for Christmas, here’s what you need to do to stay in the FAA’s good graces.
