The AA awards you should book ASAP

There have been a couple of good blog posts on the US/AA merger this week: Gary covered the timing of AA migrating all US flights over to AA starting next Saturday, and MJ on Travel gave some good advise on booking paid travel and upgrades. [continue reading…]

I’m always happy to see 2% or better cashback portal payouts, especially when it means I can place smaller orders from each portal rather than relying on just one portal. Today it’s ebates turn to offer 2%, but like the past few times it’s only available using their mobile app. [continue reading…]

On Tuesday, June 30th, Southwest is opening their schedule for bookings through March 8, 2016. This extension (from the current schedule bookable through January 4) adds a couple of holiday weekends as well as any mid-winter school holidays. [continue reading…]

This week it was time for me to apply for a new Citi card, and I decided to throw in an AMEX card as well. I had planned to open a Starwood Preferred Guest business card as it’s been over a year since I closed my last one, but… 25K? Really? Come on, AMEX, bring us a summer promotion! So I decided instead to add some Delta miles to my balance which was emptied out booking travel for the four of us to Australia and New Zealand for this November. [continue reading…]

4 is the new 5: On cashback strategies.

For years now the holy grail of manufactured spending for cashback as well as miles and points has been any card that offers 5 points or 5% cashback on spending. Whether it’s capped or uncapped, on a very narrow category or on all spending, it’s hard to argue with 5X. The Miles Professor proved this very effectively by handily beating a whole host of other MSers in 2013’s Mile Madness competition by skipping more creative strategies and developing a very simple, efficient routine that earned her 5X. This post might get long and boring, so I’ll save you some time and give you the information you need to know first:

Book your Southwest points travel early and often. If you plan to travel around holidays, book as soon as the schedule opens (the next schedule extension, for travel through January 4, 2016, is May 14). But then do us all a favor by waiting a couple of weeks to add your companions traveling on companion passes. [continue reading…]

Southwest has long been the best points program for domestic travel for many of us. I’ve written about them before, but many people still don’t make the most of the potential of Southwest points. There was a Southwest devaluation from ~1.7 cents to ~1.5 cents in 2013, and then in February they announced another revaluation. Here’s what you should be doing with any Southwest points this week as well as in the future, and a prediction that I’d say has a solid 2.222222% chance of being correct! [continue reading…]

You’ve probably been getting lots of mail and email relating to the AAdvantage/US Dividend miles programs. Lots of it is just marketing nonsense, but if you have a Citi AA Visa card you might want to double-check that mail. It might be bad news, not junk mail! [continue reading…]

How do you keep track of your miles, points, cards and applications? This question that comes up regularly, and it scares me how little tracking some people do. Our points tracking spreadsheet is simple and keeps most of the important info needed for churning cards and booking travel in one place. If you have a much better system than we do, I’d love to be able to share yours, minus the data. [continue reading…]
