Award Sweet Spot: East of Denver on ANA

This is part of a series on origin-based award program sweet spots which will be compiled in the Award Sweet Spots by Origin section of the Resources tab at the top of the page. Actually, as you can see, this sweet spot does extend West of Denver and even includes Phoenix, and gets you from anywhere in the green circles to Central America or the Caribbean for just 20K-22K miles per person [continue reading…]

How should you approach miles collecting?

There have been several posts on Saverocity blogs recently on the idea of having, funding and maintaining a travel savings account. But where should you start, keeping in mind that one size does not fit all [continue reading…]

Airports, Wheelchairs, Disabilities and Other Random Stuff

What disability? No, it’s not my disability of ADD and general stupidity. That will come up later. When Bonnie was 14 years old, a pain in her thigh that wouldn’t go away turned out to be osteosarcoma – bone cancer that typically occurs during a teenage growth spurt. [continue reading…]

The End is Here!

A couple of credit card offers are supposed to expire today.

Starwood Preferred Guest Personal and Business Cards

Just in case you were unconscious over the past month and this is somehow the only webpage you can view, you should know that today is the last day to get approved for Starwood Preferred Guest personal or business cards and get the 30,000 point bonus after spending $5000 on the card within 6 months. Tomorrow it will be back to 25,000 points, where it will likely stay until next summer. You can give someone else 5,000 points by using their referral link – check your favorite forum’s referral or conga theads, or you could use my referral which is under the ‘Credit Card Links’ tab. Besides Starwood hotels, [continue reading…]

The End is Coming!

No, not that end, but the end of the greatest rewards credit card in the history of rewards, credit, and cards. Except for the fact that it has an annoyingly small bonus, an annoying annual fee, annoying roundtrip requirements and annoying booking fees even when you book online. [continue reading…]

Family and a DO, and a Family DO

What is the deal with DOs? Why is the O in DO often capitalized or, for that matter, the D? I am much better at misspelling than I am at spelling, but maybe it has to do with the fact that DOs are often held at or in connection with airports, and the caps lock button got stuck. [continue reading…]

Getting Started: Git-R-Done Award Booking

Git-R-Done Award Booking

Today we’re going to try to spell out some of what goes into award booking and family award searches. Stick with it and it just might be helpful! This is the first of what I’m sure will be a sporadically posted series on award booking for families.

Warning: this will take some time. There are no real shortcuts here, but once you dive in the challenge of award booking can be one of the most fun parts of the miles-and-points travel hobby, after the travel itself.

Like anyone who plays the miles and points game, we often have friends ask how we can suddenly travel so much. So I dive in and tell them the basic premise, and usually their eyes are glazed over within a couple minutes. Once in a while someone actually wants more info and details, so I send them an email offering to help them figure out, plan and book one trip. Along with a warning that they will be spending lots and lots of time learning a new language, researching all kinds of things and memorizing rules of constantly changing rewards programs if they want to go beyond that one trip at a time approach. So before you click that next link for a deal that’s too good to pass up, take a quick look at what it has done to our travels and travel budget: [continue reading…]
