So you’ve looked at lots of posts and done research on award booking sweet spots and the best uses of miles to Europe. Or Hawaii or Alaska or wherever you’d like to go. And one thing keeps happening: they don’t work from your airport. Maybe because you’re just outside that distance band, or maybe there are just not enough seats from your airport to the hub you need to get to. Like ever. Sound familiar? [continue reading…]

Twas the morning after Christmas
A slow day at work,
I finished the morning’s tasks
And took a short break
Glanced at the MR forum on Flyertalk

A couple weeks ago I wrote about our plans to get a companion pass to replace Bonnie’s current pass which expires at the end of this year.

Several readers have contacted me for tips and clarification on timing that spending, but it’s pretty straightforward. It’s even more so for anyone applying now: don’t hit the $2000 spending until early January 2015. A few also asked me to notify them when the business card is available. Now it is! A few weeks ago I realized I hadn’t opened a new card for almost two months, so I decided to do something about it. Chase business had denied me for cards in July 2013 and again in January 2014 while approving Bonnie’s applications about every 6 months. The difference? [continue reading…]

Saving Avios with Direct Flights

In August I thought I had finished up putting together all the British Airways Avios sweet spot posts and maps (for the U.S., anyways) with this post on Avios sweet spots from the Midwest. You can also check out Avios from Florida, the rest of the East coast, and the West coast with maps and ways to make the most of nonstop flights on British Airways partners Aer Lingus, Alaska, American, LAN, TAM and US Airways. But it turns out there is another nice little (very little) sweet spot: direct flights. [continue reading…]

Southwest Companion Pass and Application Timing

This was supposed to be a post about an App-O-Rama but we decided to call it quits after just two applications so there’s really nothing to say there. If you’re looking to earn a Southwest Companion pass for 2015 and 2016 though, you might want to go ahead and get started. Nope, it’s not too early! [continue reading…]

[UPDATE 3/18/15: it looks like this run, which continued at half speed for 7 months after the 100k links died, has finally come to an end. None of the old 50k links worked, now ‘option 5’ loads but is unverified and seems to be on its deathbed.]

It was a dark and stormy night. Jake, a marketing manager at Citi, sipped a complimentary Bud Light at an undisclosed secure location in a DFW admiral’s club, answering texts from his wife – ‘Yes, I just got on a plane to spend a night with a stranger in Dallas.’ [continue reading…]

Maybe this isn’t fair. After all I’m just running into the same roadblock that families with 3 or more children deal with on nearly every hotel stay. But there has been a lot of attention given to IHG’s ‘Into the Nights’ promotion. [continue reading…]

Looking Up: Europe for Next Summer With AA Miles

It has certainly been a fun year for anyone willing to jump on generous Citi offers for AA miles. Using those miles, however, has been a whole different story. Especially for families hoping their windfall would send their family to Europe next summer. Unfortunately the forum thread Trouble using AA miles has a couple of very typical examples of the difficulty with finding award seats. [continue reading…]
