The Airport Where Everybody Knows Your Name

OTD, July 2010

OTD, July 2010

I’m in full dreaming mode today. Between leaving for Chicago Seminars tomorrow to talk travel with 600 of my closest friends and the prospect of 2 wide open weeks for solo travel next August I just can’t keep my mind here in front of me. Not such a bad thing considering the news, don’t you think;)

Dreaming leads to remembering, which leads to today’s post about airports…or about one airport in particular: IATA code OTD (don’t click if you want to play along). It’s the only airport I’ve traveled to (in probably 100) where I’ve opened the single door and been greeted by name…because I was the only passenger for the 4PM daily return flight!

The flight is a daytrip from the country’s capital (there and back) and cost about $80 round trip. In this case the journey is definitely the highlight as the flight doesn’t go over 8000 feet and you can see the migration patterns of the dolphins and whales in season (I did it in July).

The destination was the location for the filming of “Survivor”. Tourism is minimal, but there are a couple of small hotels and boat tours if you want to stay overnight. Unfortunately (and unexpectedly, considering the isolation) the beaches are also somewhat polluted with garbage.

What’s the most isolated airport you’ve visited? Please share!
