Marriott released their MegaBonus promotion for stays between February 1 through April 30, 2015. More on why I’m bolding “stays” further down, but the offers generally vary, but here’s what I got:
For me, its not the best I’ve seen, but, it could be meaningful. Note that this awards 2,500 points per stay. Meaning that you could earn the entire bonus after only 11 stays. Previous bonuses offered a two tier reward. For example here is what I had last during Marriott’s last MegaBonus period (that ends 1/15/15):
For example, I’m not going to make it to 15 paid nights, meaning regardless of my 8 nights, I’ll earn no points. I can tell you that those 8 nights were based on 2 stays, so under the new promotion, I would earn 2,500 Marriott Reward points. Its not much, but its certainly more than the zero I’ll get from the current promotion.
Is this an indication that Marriott is changing focus?
I could be reading too much into this, but right now Marriott has the highest requirements for top tier elites–75 nights–with no option for fewer stays to attain top tier status. Historically, at least I can’t recall Marriott paying a whole lot of attention to stays. Its always been nights. The question I would pose: Is Marriott “waking up” and realizing that they need to at least give credit to the road warriors who stay frequently but may not rack up 75 nights?
Wrapping Up
Everyone travels differently, but if you are more the type that stays a single night (whether for business or pleasure) at a time, this Marriott MegaBonus is for you. As far as the bigger question about Marriott’s focus — are they shifting to recognizing stays in addition to nights — I think only time will tell.
