Does the New Starwood Preferred Guest Promotion Measure Up?

I preface this blog with the following: I am a HUGE fan of the Starwood Preferred Guest program. In fact, I’d even go so far to say that Starwood is my hotel chain of choice, because of the consistency of service that I know I’ll get when I go there. That being said, I’m not necessarily a fan of everything they do. Their latest promotion, while interesting, definitely made me want to take a closer look at just how much of a points opportunity this actually is.

The new promotion is simply titled: “More For You.” Unlike other promotions, the premise is simple. Between now and December 15, SPG members receive:

  • Double Starpoints on stays of two or more nights
  • Triple Starpoints on stays of two or more nights that include a weekend

With this math, the Starpoints could add up quickly, right? Reading the fine print, only the base points of two points per dollar are multiplied. If everything adds up correctly, this still isn’t a bad way to go about things: elite members could still earn up to seven points per dollar spent at Starwood properties. Additionally, when you use the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express (which I don’t have an affiliate link for), you’ll add on an additional five points per dollar to your earnings.

So under the best circumstances, eligible stays may earn up to between nine and ten points per dollar, IF everything aligns correctly. Of course, your earnings may vary – and my math may not be correct. I was a communications major, after all, not a math major.

(Ed. Note: Thanks to those that left comments correcting my original math. This exact situation is why I let Trevor worry about the math, while I go places. It could also be the reason why I haven’t seen any ad royalties from this site either. Hmm…)

SPG points are some of the most versatile points available, because of their easy transferability to hundreds of programs in the world – sometimes, at a premium. And while Trevor disagrees with me that the SPG Moments offers some pretty entertaining ways to waste spend your SPG points, there are a few that I wouldn’t mind wasting spending points on. After all, as I previously wrote about: points and miles are only as good as the experiences you get out of them.

So does it make sense to sign up and chase after the SPG More For You promotion? As my friend and mentor Chavo often reminds me: “It doesn’t have to add up, it just has to be right.” If you’re running for Starwood status as the year closes, or Starwood is your hotel of choice, then this could be a promotion you’ll want to sign up for.

Are you signing up for this bonus offer? Or is underwhelming a better term for this promotion? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. How do you get to 14 points per dollar? Base points of 2 per dollar x 3= 6, plus 1 for bonus, then 2 for SPG card. Added together, that comes to 9. I’d love to get the 14, but I’m missing something.

    • Thanks for the comment & correction, Christian. I misread the math on the (non-affiliate linked) AMEX site, and had the grandeur of super points bonus. This is why Trevor doesn’t let me do math, usually…

  2. I think your math is indeed a little off on this one.
    My calculations:
2 base pts per dollar x 3 for a weekend stay of two or more nights = 6 pts/dollar

Platuinum 75 night status brings 100% bonus on base pts = 2 pts/dollar

Spg amex gives 2 points per dollar spent at Spg hotels = 2

6 + 2 + 2 = 10 points per dollar for a best case scenario. Still not bad if you were planning the stay either way as it is about a 20% discount off a room fare if you consider a Starpoint to be worth about 2 cents (8% bonus above normal from the promo).
