Amazon bans the sale of Apple and Google Streaming Video Devices

Balancing Amazon.com's many services

Via Bloomberg, Amazon has announced that they will stop selling Apple and Google video streaming devices. Their reasoning: They aren’t compatible with Amazon’s Prime Video.

There are some devices that Amazon will continue to sell, that apparently interact better, like Roku and others.

The move is an interesting one. As Amazon expands into other markets, it will invariably have hard decisions to make. This being a rather major decision to exclude competitors–for the reason of compatibility–implies that Amazon is not just about being a marketplace for products, but rather wants to be a more full service provider of content.

What does this mean for resellers?

I’d argue, it doesn’t mean a whole lot for now. But, if Amazon keeps expanding into different electronics, that could change. Amazon does have the Fire Phone, and the Fire HD Tablet. Do I see Amazon suddenly restricting Apple iPads, Apple iPhones, and Google Nexus phones? I don’t think so. I think Amazon would be uh, the opposite of wise, to do that, given how hot sellers they are. So, I wouldn’t be concerned about selling iPads or iPhones.

Conclusion

Really, what this boils down to is, Amazon is attempting to flex its muscles as a full service provider (at least of video streaming content in this case). How will this pan out for Amazon? Probably missed sales of Google Chromecast and Apple TV, but I’m not convinced this will make a big impact on their bottom line. None-the-less, it is an interesting development. The theorist in me wonders if the fact that Amazon is no longer letting sellers resell MacBook’s as new, is related…
