Is Amex catching on? If you look at the T&C on their Mercedes-Benz card, which awards 3 points per dollar spent at gas stations, the terms state:
…2 additional points (for a total of 3 points) on gasoline at gas stations located in the U.S. (superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations), for each transaction of $400 or less…
The bold emphasis is mine, of course. I checked the T&Cs for a couple of other cards but I didn’t see any more language like that. As to whether this is an outlier or an ominous portent, your guess is as good as mine. For all I know, that language has been there for years.

I don’t know if it’s been there for years, but I remember reading about the $400 threshold a few months ago.

Do you happen to remember where you read about it?
MIH says
Amex Blue Cash (the old card) T&C has the same $400 limit.
ChasingThePoints says
Wait – but I thought all of the AMEX Platinum cards were always 1x for purchases? Did the MB card change that as well?
In the T&C I see a total of 2x for restaurants
pfdigest says
This isn’t the Mercedes Platinum, it’s the plain-jane Mercedes card, which I think has been around for a couple of years.
Paul says
Crikey. That language has been around forever. It is specific to gas stations. They didn’t want a big rig fleet owner filling up several hundred gallon tanks per rig and getting massive cash back/points.
pfdigest says
That is good news, thanks!

Thanks

Dunno about the above, but my first statement for my new blue cash card only has a few grocery shopping trips counted as category spend, and not the 6k+ on vanilla reloads and paypal cash cards I bought.
pfdigest says
Wow! That is interesting… this is for the classic blue cash?
pfdigest says
…and where’d you buy them?
ablazinob says
remember amex blue is a month behind with cash back so check your next statement
