Some of you may have noticed a reduced quantity of posts in the last several weeks. The reasons for that: multiple viruses sweeping through the household, a bad back… and a family get-together, courtesy of Ultimate Rewards and Avios! My wife comes from Nicaragua, and since we have four kids and each of her two siblings has three, it’s expensive to get everybody together.
Solution: combine Avios earned from the British Airways card and Ultimate Rewards transferred to Avios to fly her brother and his family up! Plus a few more UR points transferred to Hyatt so they can stay a night in Miami on each end of the trip. Plus a bunch of Club Carlson points for an overnight trip to Columbia, SC (who needs Radission Blu when you can stay at the Columbia Airport Country Inn & Suites?) so we could visit the Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens. We’ll hopefully be able to do a similar trip for Mrs. PFD’s sister and her family this summer.
And that, my friends, is one reason why I like credit cards.

This is awesome, and the least expected use of miles when I started this game. But over the past year we have sent my wife’s relatives to China, to Miami and to visit us in Texas. Now it’s our turn to use some!

+1. It’s refreshing to read about outstanding real-world redemptions!

well, here are my stories of using CC points/miles:
last year: 1 free trip for 3 people to Canada, staying at Fairmont Banff hotel
This year so far: 2 free trips to NY…
we are working on the trip to Paris using avois and points for air and hotel…
Thanks a lot for your posts!

Sweet! Thats a great use of points for family, especially those from nicaragua. 😉 I lived there for a couple of years and im going back there this summer on points! I agree this is a great reason to like credit cards (rewards).
