The bad news–from a professional basketball standpoint anyway–is that I live in Charlotte. The good news is that the credit card industry has given me a reason to care about the NBA finals!
I recently signed up for the BBVA Compass NBA Amex card. They’re offering a nice little deal: get the card before June 30 and the $50 annual fee is waived for the life of the account. Oh, and also they’re offering 5% cashback on all spending during the NBA finals.
I don’t know anything about BBVA’s credit card operation, but they gave me a pretty good credit card line. I was not too impressed with this email, however:
The key phrase there at the bottom: “Bobcats fans like yourself”. For those of you who don’t keep up with the NBA, the team was called the Bobcats, but the name was changed before the 2014-15 season after rights to it were relinquished by the New Orleans Pelicans after they dropped the name. (The original Charlotte Hornets franchise had moved to New Orleans a while back.)
So, it was amusing to see the Hornets graphic combined with the Bobcats name, as I’d thought I’d heard the last of the awful Bobcats team name. But I have no complaints after they sent me this:
They are really promoting the heck out of this thing! Not that I’m complaining. The NBA finals ought to be interesting this year.

It could be a lot worse. Your team could’ve changed their name to the Pelicans!

I randomly picked a team and ended up with one from Cleveland. Cavaliers or something I think they are called. Do SM in CLT have VGC or AMEX? Any problems buying multiple VGCs at their malls?

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I like “New Orleans Pelicans” more than “Charlotte Bobcats”.

Sent you an email. I think the Cavaliers are supposed to be pretty good this year…

Oh, and don’t forget, I think Doctor of Credit shared that there will be a portal offering 2% on AMEX Gift Cards… so that kicks you up to 7x, and you can do it from the comfort of your home (bunny slippers optional)!

How long did it take you guys to actually get approved and get the card? I applied last week and tried calling for approval and was told they will call me in couple of days. Asking to speak with a credit analyst, the guy said he was the credit analyst, but he couldn’t process my application because he was busy with other apps at that point… Finally got a call from them over the weekend and all their robohuman CSR wanted to do was go over the info I submitted on the application to… submit my application. Now I gotta wait for decision but I want to play! 🙂

Not long for me… instant approval, had the card in about a week.

How did you receive that $250 offer? Was it by email or did you have to visit the site? I chose the NBA logo for my card so I hope I don’t miss out on personalized offers because of this.
pfdigest says
Email.

The card is a dud.
My first attempted purchase on June 4th (granted not a small one) declined and immediately put my account ‘under review’. As of now still ‘under review’.
I am not alone in this ‘under review’ status.
Save the inquiry on this one.

I am in the same boat. The only good thing for me was that my initial large purchase went through but a subsequent small purchase was declined later in the day and my account is being reviewed by the “Internal Fraud” department. I take it by your comment that this has happened to a lot of people?
