I left at 8 AM this morning from Boston and am currently in the middle of a twelve hour layover in Charlotte. Why layover in Charlotte do you ask? Well, the first and most obvious reason is this is the routing that worked the best when booking the award ticket – I wanted to be able to meet up with my friend and fly down to Brazil together. But the fact that I love the food here doesn’t hurt either.
The last week I’ve had only one thing on my mind: The World Cup. A few friends and I will be leaving for Rio next week and are planning to catch a couple of games. Although you might not be interested in going to the World Cup, I think this is a great illustration of the benefits and limitations of using miles for trips – and how they can save you a lot of money if you use them correctly.
If the first 24 hours in Charlotte weren’t enough, we still had another 48 hours of eating and quilting to go. Although I didn’t go AS crazy on the back nine, we still had a pretty great time. I was somehow conned into taking a trip down to Charlotte to visit Jess’ sister and husband for a weekend. Ostensibly, we went down so Jess could make a quilt for Baby M – since quilts can only be made in Charlotte or some nonsense. Still, I’m not really complaining since Charlotte is one of my favorite cities to visit, especially when it comes to eating. I’m fairly certain that my arteries are under more duress now than they were before the trip, but hey, quilts can only be made in Charlotte, right? Ultimately, I view/viewed this trip as a test run for our big trip this summer; it was useful to get a sense of how Baby M travels these days.
Most people just sign up for the Barclays US Air Card, make one purchase to get the sign up bonus, and then throw it in the sock drawer never to be seen or heard from again (until cancellation time of course). While I must admit that I’m somewhat like that, I recently used my care to redeem the little used companion certificate that comes annually with the card and thought I’d share my experiences here.
