It’s fairly obscure, but there’s a 3% unlimited cash back credit card available only to residents of Hawaii, California, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada. It’s the JCB Marukai card, issued by JCB bank and targeting the Japanese community (Marukai is a Japanese retail chain), hence the West coast focus.
Since we live on the east coast, we don’t have any experience with this card, but from what we can tell, it’s legitimate. There are threads on this card at Fatwallet and Flyertalk if you’d like to read more or ask a question. There are some mild drawbacks: first of all, there’s a $25 annual free, and the 3% only kicks in after your first $3,000 in annual purchases. Reports are that credit lines tend to be on the low side, and also that you may have trouble getting the card accepted in some places. In theory, any place that accepts Discover should accept JCB, but in practice it doesn’t always work out that way.
That said, there’s no other card offering rewards like this, and beggars can’t be choosers. If we lived in the appropriate state, we’d be all over this. If 3% isn’t good enough for you, you could always go for the JCB card that gives you a free bag of rice upon sign-up.
