Over at Dough Roller you’ll find 68 Restaurants and Retailers Offering Free Gift Cards for Givers, a list of national chains offering $X in free gift cards when you buy $Y in gift cards. It is a very helpful compendium, and kudos to author Abby Hayes for pulling this together.
The list is a great starting point for getting even better deals. Some questions to ask when looking through this:
Does the retailer let you buy gift cards with gift cards? There was a Chipotle promotion a while back that gave you a free burrito whenever you bought a gift card of a certain denomination–and then you could turn around and use that gift card to buy another gift card. Mmm… Chipotle.
Is there an Amex Sync deal that can make a good deal even better? For example, the Gang of 68 includes the $20/$100 Maggiano’s deal–but as you may recall there are $10/$50 and $10/$60 Amex offers that can be combined with it.
Can credit card rewards sweeten the pot? The list mentions a $10/$75 Barnes & Noble deal–if you’ve got a grandfathered Citi Forward card, or even a Barnes & Noble credit card (does anybody actually have one of those?) that’s another 5% off.
Can any of these gift cards be resold on the secondary market? Check out Chasing The Points if you’re interested in this game–his latest gift card deal involves Discover, Gap, and Lands End.
Can any of these gift cards be used to buy something that could be resold? If you want to learn more about the reselling game, BigHabitat is a new blog but so far the content has been superb. Speaking of which, BH has more guidance on how to get the mysterious Staples discount from last week:
- Open firefox (don’t ask why, it’s part of the mystery), some people have had it work with chrome but not me.
- Go to a cash back or rewards portal (you never know if it will count)
- Go to Staples.com and log into your account.
- Go to a gift card like Sears, Kmart, Gamestop, etc
- Don’t see anything yet? Just wait a few minutes.
If you are lucky, you will get an exclusive offer.
