I’m guilty of getting wrapped up in the fancy stuff we can do with miles and points, like this:
and this:
or this:
But today I’m not really thinking about any of that. I’m thinking about a rainy Wedding Day and Deal Kid’s homework. His 5th grade writing assignment was on irony and he was given the lyrics to Alanis Morrisette’s Ironic and asked to show 10 actual examples of irony in the song.
It’s a great assignment, to be sure, and it got the family talking about our actual wedding day. From two hours before until right up until the minute of the ceremony the skies were black and it rained sideways, or at least that’s what it seemed from beneath my veil. When you see the church, which we had chosen because my Grandpa used to throw rocks at the windows to attract my Grandma’s attention, you might understand why that was of concern:
Fortunately, it stopped just in time, but no, rain on your wedding day isn’t ironic, just annoying!
Nice story, Deal Mommy, but what about miles? Well, telling the story made us realize that our kids had never seen where we were married, and that I hadn’t seen a lot of family in a very long time. Diligent tracking of promotions meant that I knew USAirways was doing double miles out of Washington DC, and that there was an E-Saver this weekend to Indianapolis (near where I was married and my family is from). Marriott Megabonus meant that I already had three free nights earned from previous stays this year: which come in really handy since there must be something going on at Indiana University this weekend and rooms were $250/night.
So, without (too much) guilt about killing our budget, I could put us on a plane tomorrow and this weekend we are going to be there for my Aunt Glenda’s birthday lunch. She made my veil and I can’t think of a better way to thank her.
