If you follow all of the Points Blogs, you know PointBreaks are a great deal where points stays at IHG hotels are slashed to 5,000 points a night. This specific list is good till the end of October. Please indluge me and suffer through ANOTHER PointBreaks post because PointBreaks are about the best bargain out there for family getaways.
My single favorite on the list is Holiday Inn Solomons Island, MD Not technically a “Beach” hotel, Solomons Island is tucked along Maryland’s Eastern Shore. We lucked into a Pointbreaks rate last summer and had a lovely, QUIET weekend hanging out eating oysters and enjoying the view. Be sure to check out the “O’s and Bohs” special with a dozen oysters and a Natty Boh (Baltimore’s native beer) at nearby Solomon’s Pier.
Another way Pointbreaks are useful is for Oblications. Take a good look again and see if there are any on there near where you are going for summer vacation, and you may save a lot of stress by not having to sleep on a pull out couch! I see a couple nearby relatives in the Mid-West and may try to combine with Frontier’s low fares from Dulles to get the Deal Kids some cousin time.
Another option is to take a look to see if any are near your Alma Mater/who they’re playing or favorite pro team for a football weekend: I see Staybridge Suites INDIANAPOLIS-CARMEL (Colts) for instance. Also great for leaf-peeping.
See any favorite college/pro towns I’ve missed?
(NOTE: the whole list may not be updated just yet on the PointBreaks page when you look. If that happens, just click on the hotel and the 5K rate will pop up if available.)
- “Back Door” point buying”Need a top up on your IHG account? You can transfer IHG points in from Chase. Just transfer in 5,000, then do the following:
- Book a “Cash and Points” stay at a 15,000 points hotel for 5,000 + $70. Here’s one you can use: Holiday Inn Winchester 15k
- Cancel it. You’ll be charged $70 and refunded 15,000 points!
- Repeat as needed (within reason…don’t go crazy or IHG will shut you down).Using just the transfer method you’re effectively buying points at .7 each.
Besides football, oysters and family, how can you use Point Breaks this go-around? Please share in the comments.

I remembered your post about Solomon’s so we booked that for a four day weekend in August. Also book New Haven-Branford. Just returned from a points break vacation covering Boston-CT and the kids were begging to go back to the beach near New Haven. Beaches, pizza, and kids museums! Should be perfect!
Hi Brandi,
You might see me there as I booked one myself! I also am considering some of the New England locations for leaf-peeping.
