The Deal Mommy

Corazon Burrito

I was cruising down the highway today in my Fiat 500 (very sporty version, right up to the red dashboard) when a ghost from vacation past came on the radio…and it was murder!

Murder on the Dance Floor, that is, the monster hit (over in Europe) circa 2002. That was the last year before Deal Kid entered the picture, and Deal Dad and I along with some friends were getting our first taste of Ireland. That (SO STUPID) song followed us wherever we went and became some sort of private joke…”you better not steal the groove”! I don’t remember the song making it to the states (maybe it did in clubs…you tell me) but memories of that St. Patricks day in Kilkenny came flooding back.

Most trips seem to get a theme song: Last summer Deal Dad and I fell in love both with “Let it Go” by Passenger and “Wake me up” by Avicii. Note I said last summer as they were hitting the charts in Ireland. I have to admit even I’m sick of both at the moment.

This year’s nominee: Hideaway. I tend to stick to “Mom Radio” at home but when I travel I tend more towards “KissKiss FM”, which is a mix of top 40 and electronica. I’m certain will be a monster hit in the states if it isn’t already by the time I get back.

The song that means the most, though, is Something Beautiful, by Robbie Williams. The year was 2003. The first line of the song is “You can’t manufacture a miracle” but at that time I was doing just that…2003 is the summer I had Deal Kid in Dublin. The entire Escapology album still gets regular play at Chez Deal Mommy. Last year I heard Something Beautiful with then 9 year old deal kid (and the whole Deal Family) in our first taxi upon arriving in Dublin…and yes, I teared up.

And now onto the Corazon Burrito: the year, 1997. The destination: Andalucia. The song that obsessed us: This one. Don’t ask me how, but I mangled the song entirely in my head and turned the line “corazon bonito” (beautiful heart) into…well, a corazon burrito. Those poor CD store clerks! (Remember CD stores?)

Do songs become entrenched into your travel memories? Please share in the comments.

Two songs stick out in my memory, both from 2001: I did a couple of weeks in Italy, and for some reason I heard the song “Sing” by Travis everywhere I went. I would have hoped the official anthem of my trip to Italy would be something in Italian, but oh well…

Second, I also spent maybe a week and a half in the Czech Republic that summer and for some reason I heard “It’s Raining Men”–a song whose existence I was only aware of from a gag on “The Simpsons”–about a half dozen times in a variety of places. I have never heard it before or since.
