How I’m Using Pointbreaks to Save My Sanity

Pointbreaks, take me away!

Pointbreaks, take me away!

If you are follow all of the Points Blogs, you know about PointBreaks , where points stays at IHG hotels are slashed to 5,000 points a night.

I hate that these lists always start in Asia or somewhere exotic so that by the time you get to the stuff that actually makes sense for most people last minute, you’ve already tuned out.  Don’t.

PointBreaks are great last minute getaways when you just don’t have the money to do anything else, but they can do more than that.

They can quite literally save my sanity.

So how can a hotel sale keep me out of the loony bin? Well, the Deal In-laws are arriving Wednesday for a 2 week visit over Thanksgiving. I love having them here, Deal Dad and the kids REALLY love having them here, but our Wonder Years era house with a TINY kitchen just isn’t built for that many people bumping into each other every day 24 HOURS A DAY for TWO WEEKS. Fortunately, there’s a Pointbreaks hotel not 2 miles from my house so I can have the family there guilt free and they can get some rest, have their own bathroom, and all of us have some breathing room!

I encourage you to take a GOOD list at the PointBreaks  list and see if your sanity can be saved as well. Stays are only good for the next month or so, but are fully cancel-able so there’s no risk. If you’re low on points, see the buying method below.

  • “Back Door” point buying”Need a top up on your IHG account? You can transfer IHG points in from Chase. Just transfer in 5,000, then do the following:
  • Book a “Cash and Points” stay at a 15,000 points hotel for 5,000 + $70. Here’s one you can use: Holiday Inn Winchester 15k
  • Cancel it. You’ll be charged $70 and refunded 15,000 points!
  • Repeat as needed (within reason…don’t go crazy or IHG will shut you down).Using just the transfer method you’re effectively buying points at .7 each.
