Redeeming reward points for car rentals

I've never been able to find a clear cut answer to this question:

If I were to redeem points (let's say Thank You rewards) for car rental, would my rental include the secondary rental insurance that's usually covered by many credit cards?

yes, you are essentially booking the rental with cash, but using points. Same policies on the secondary rental insurance.

Another option is to split the purchase between cash and points. Pay the majority with points and leave a few dollars to pay with your credit card. Then technically the entire "cost" of your rental will be made with a credit card.

Discover card explicitly includes insurance when using Discover certificates to pay for the rental.

It is typically a 100 points = $1 return, correct? so its middle of the road as far as redeeming points go. I am balking at using MR points --> herts GC--> rental for that exact reason
