Las Vegas hotels?

A couple buddies of mine are thinking about doing a Vegas trip. However I'm a bit stumped as to what a good hotels I should be looking at. It's our first time in Vegas so I don't want to be in a shit hole for a week but I don't want to be spending ungodly amounts of money in a place we won't really be in.

So for those of you that visit Vegas. Any suggestions? Places I should look into? Places I should avoid like the plague? I personally was just going to get Airbnb and call it a day however these guys are looking like they want to stay on the strip.

Prices at Vegas hotels vary widely based on if there is a big convention going on or during the weekends. I generally like the MGM/Mirage properties better than the Caesars ones. Sign up for mlife.com which is MGM's main site. You will get special offers in there and the prices are lower than anywhere else.

My favorites are the Bellagio/Aria/MGM Grand. The Mandalay Bay is also nice but I am not crazy about the location at the south end of the strip. Stay away from the Excalibur/Harrahs/Flamingo/Linq.

Also check the Hilton Vacation properties. They have a few on the strip and some have multiple bedroom options.

Aria is amazing. Vdara is nice too. If you were fine with off the strip, but with a shuttle, I'd recommend South Point.

Really depends on what you're looking for.

Strip location?
Price point?
In-casino gaming?
On the strip.
I don't care honestly. They might.
Who knows? I might throw some money away.

Put it like this. We are basically recreating the Hangover. We just want to go for a week and have fun. :cool:

To recreate the Hangover you'll need the top-floor suite at Caesar's :) Won't be listed online, but call them and offer them a stupid amount of money. It is attainable... technically. They also have other rooms there that aren't $20k/night (or whatever.)

If you don't have too specific demands I'd suggest you be somewhere mid-Strip -- that way you're not far from much of the action. I personally LOVE Aria and Bellagio. Aria isn't cheap but it's a good value for one of the newer spots (~5 years old.) Bellagio is a bit more "old money" but it's pretty badass.

There aren't any real perks (IMO) to staying at a certain hotel just because of their dining/clubs. However, where you do get a bonus is for the pool scene. You typically get right in to the hotel's pool wherever you are staying with fuss/charge (massive pool dayclubs notwithstanding.)

Other Mid-Strip:
* The Cosmopolitan is the "cool" spot of today. However, since I try and spend with MLife (MGM's reward program), I don't spend much time in there.
* I like -- but not love -- Paris.
* Planet Hollywood is fairly white trash but the casino floor isn't bad, nor are a few restaurants.
* Bally's = NO.

Linq isn't that bad. I really enjoyed Monte Carlo as well and it isn't expensive and is nice

Granted, their main angle is how to save money in Vegas. But they also recommend Caesar's Palace as one of their favorite hotels, so it's not all about finding ways to cut pennies in half. The resources on that site are outstanding and they give it to you straight.

Check out the Delano. It's attached to Mandalay Bay. I stayed there in July for a bachelor party. The major benefit is that it's an all-suites hotel for a normal price. Don't underestimate the value from an extra bathroom and sitting area.

My wife and I are huge fans of Aria the last time we went. I was just in Vegas for work and they have the tram that goes around the whole strip now, so I don't think it'll be that much of a hassle to get to the Strip from Aria.
I usually end up using Hotwire to find the hotel I want. There are lists of hotels with amenities that show up on Hotwire that you can get a pretty good guess of what hotel you'll end up with at a really great deal.
