Club Carlson Radisson Aruba

I know at one point Matt posted or tweeted that he had made reservations for the Radisson Aruba in February 2016 prior to the devaluation. A few, including myself, responded that we had done the same. There was even a joke that the next Saverocity DO would be in Aruba in February.

Anyway the point of my post is two fold. First, rumors have been circulating for some time that the Radisson was being sold. I'd love to hear any experiences around "reflagging" of properties especially for Radisson and/or points based reservations. I know that Radisson sold their St Martin property to Riu recently. I'd also like to know if anyone has Aruba reservations closer than February and how they are treated.

Secondly, I'd like to know who will be at the Radisson in February. I'd love to meet up. I'll be there President's week, February 14th to the 20th.

Here's what I know (or think I know) about the sale

Radisson was in discussions with Hilton to sell the property. As negotiations were coming to a close, Riu came in and made a higher offer. Riu recently purchased the adjacent Westin and I believe has another Aruba location as well. Radisson accepted Riu's higher offer. Hilton filed a suit. The court date has been delayed several times in hopes that Hilton and Radisson can come to an agreement. Apparently the tourism board would prefer the Hilton over another all inclusive.

From what I've read, the selling hotel will generally make arrangement with the new hotel to honor existing reservations. If that is not possible, they will try to arrange comparable rooms. However, this is very YMMV. The Riu honored Radisson reservations when they took over the St. Martin property.

Then the next question is if your reservations are honored will this change be better or worse. Radisson Aruba has an executive lounge, but it is not included with gold status. You can pay to upgrade, but it is expensive. I went to the lounge several times on my last stay and gave my name and room number. On my last day they told me it wasn't included in my reservation :)

Riu is an all inclusive resort. When they took over the Radisson in St. Martin they didn't convert to all inclusive for ~6 months. If they acquire the Radisson, I assume by February they'll convert to all inclusive. That would be a nice perk if they honor our reservations.

The Hilton will likely honor any HHonors status even if your reservations were through Radisson. I assume they would continue to run the existing lounge which would be a nice perk for Diamond members.

I've already booked my airfare so I'm considering booking a refundable alternate, but hope its not needed.

No, not at all. I know Riu wants it, but Radisson and Hilton are still talking. Riu bought the Radisson in St. Martin and the Westin next to the Radisson in Aruba. I actually think it will end up being a Hilton

You also get the lounge as a Gold.

Seems as of July 15th, the Radisson will become a Hilton property. I noticed that it no longer shows up on the CC site when you look up Aruba, but there is still a green pinpoint on the map. I have reservations for the end of March, although I did want to tack on a couple of more days. It will be interesting to see what happens with reservations, etc. My husband is a HH diamond, so that will be nice. The lounge, food a drinks came in handy in Venice.

ETA: I stayed at the Radisson St. Martin while it was converting into a RIU. The breakfast there was amazing. Fresh baguettes every day and endless options to choose from. I think they probably served breakfast like that as the Radisson too.

Just apply for the Surpass or Reserve.
Good point, but I've stopped collecting Hiltopesos and don't want to pay the "price" of the credit pull. For $20-30 I can get someone to hack my account to Gold.

Also, I just checked and this hotel will be a 70,000 point redemption in HH. Glad two nights cost me only 50,000 CC. Sure hope they honor it.

Well then, eventually there will be no pesos to collect at all. I've watched things inflate for a long time. I still think hotel points, even Hiltonpesos are worth collecting. Sure, they aren't worth what they used to be. Neither is anything else. If there is an outsized value, do it. Eventually they for the most part all fall away and then you adapt to the new normal.

Glad that its Hilton - I feel that as a loyal Gold I can leverage more pressure on them to not screw us out of the 2x2nights we have booked... plus if the stars align we will actually come out ahead due the gold bennies.

Yes, Hilton mid-tier Gold status may be the most generous and Club Carlson mid-tier Gold status may be the least generous. I now see free breakfast, among other things in your future. Might even get club lounge free cocktails. If there is a club lounge they are always more generous outside the U.S.

Yes, I've read that they still have the lounge open. Haven't heard from anyone who booked rewards stays with Carlson. Would be interested to hear their experience.

I had an award booking with Club Carlson Aruba, and was there over LDW after it became a Hilton. I made sure to call ahead and give them my HH #, so that when I checked in they honoured the HH Gold status (upgraded room and free breakfast, which btw wasn't much to write home about, but better than nothing). I didn;t think to check the lounge...

Did you have to pay any additional resort fees?

Thanks that has been unclear from what i am seeing. When I log into my CC account to check the reservations it shows a $17 per day fee plus the points I used, and for the peak days (Thanksgiving and the day after) a $26 per day fee. It does not call it a resort fee, and was not there when I booked. It is just titled room cost. I thought it may be a Hilton resort fee and figured I would deal with it when I got there, but good to know you were not charged anything.

Has anyone stayed at this location lately post-brand change? I've got a stay in December for just a couple days. I've had similar issues to aviator8 and others with charges and amounts being added into my account (it used to be the fees described above and now it is showing $360.60 for each night).

just logged in an mine are still showing the mystery room cost of $17 or $26 depending on the day. None of my reservations show $360.

An update for anyone with Aruba plans. The lounge is great for breakfast and cocktail hour. Tea time is not great. The natural pool in Arikok is wonderful and has amazing snorkeling. We went to Philips animal farm today which was a lot of fun.

Yes, we rented from econocar which turned out to be Europcar. We got in Sunday at noon and rented from the airport and kept it for 3 days (just returned it a little bit ago). We returned it by the high rise area and they drove us back to the Hilton. Paid $120 for 3 days but it was just a tiny, economy with a manual transmission. Got us around the island. Not really necessary unless you want to explore Arikok national park on your own which is mostly what we used it for. Lots of great restaurants in walking distance and some of the finer restaurants a $10 cab ride away. Went to Madame Jeanette's last night which is a little pricey but a wonderful restaurant. Enjoy.

Just got back from a week stay Feb 16-23 and as Tom mentioned ran into a few people in "The Hobby". We are so easy to pick out aren't we? In any case the Hilton went out of there way to recognize my Diamond Status, even though they new I was there on Radisson points. Elton (asst. mgr. I believe) worked with us to get a nice upgrade to a suite and solving a few issues with beach umbrella reservations. While the lounge was ok for its offerings it was terribly small (especially with the families up there using it as a dinner buffet) and management was aware that this is a common complaint. Because of this we were able to ask for vouchers to take our breakfast at the Laguna restaurant which is a very robust breakfast buffet. This ended up being a nice perk that wasn't advertised. I rented a car for a week via National at the airport ($190 all in for a compact, upgraded to a mid-size which in Aruba is a Ford Ka class) since I was told I would be in it for $30 each way from/to the airport. In reality we only used the car two days (there's just not a lot to see and we didn't feel like hauling coolers to the more isolated beaches that do not have service).

Another tip around food. The Ceviche at the Pelican;s Nest (restaurant at the end of the pier in front of the Hyatt) is just fabulous and at $10 (all in) is a great value for lunch (pick up some tortilla chips) and soooo much better than the Hilton's. The property also doesn't care if you bring your own wine/champagne/liqour to the beach (tip use the room ice bucket, but it in a beach bag and wrap in a towel and you have a nice cooler all day) which can save on your bar bill as the drinks are a little over priced IMHO.

Just returned from a short stay - and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. I had 3 reservations, 2 back to back 2 night stays in my name and 1 - 2 night stay in my husbands account that I had reserved hoping our 'kids' could join us. As it turned out, only my daughter and her fiance were able to come along and I needed another 2 nights. I put them up at the Hyatt in my name in a C&P res (nice to get the stay credit!).

So I am in a position to compare the 2 properties very well. The lounge at the Hilton was much bigger and nicer than the Hyatt. The staff seemed friendlier at the Hilton and I thought the food presented at cocktail hour was superior to the Hyatt as well. I didn't eat breakfast at the Hyatt - so I can't compare first hand there.

There are other pros/cons to each property...but if I were to return - I would stay at the Hilton.
