I’ve been itching to take one more international trip in 2012. After a lot of begging and pleading, I managed to convince the Points Hater to agree to a long weekend in Ireland over Veteran’s day. Luckily, we live in Boston, which meant we could get there with a great value award booking using British Airways Avios.
It’s only going to cost 100,000 British Airways Avios for both my wife and me to fly to Ireland round trip in business class on Aer Lingus. For reference, most mileage programs charge 100,000 miles round trip PER PERSON for trips to Europe. So this is a great deal, which I’ll detail in a real life award booking post later (we actually only used 86,000 points total!).
Where will we be going? Originally, we were thinking of just staying in Dublin, but supposedly, Ireland is all about the countryside. So our plan is to fly into Shannon, which is on Ireland’s west coast. From there we can visit the Cliffs of Moher and the Dingle peninsula, and if we’re lucky, stay in a castle (though they all seem to be booked unfortunately).
After that, we’ll drive across the country (only a couple hours) to Dublin and spend a couple of nights there. We’re trying to decide whether to use up all my Hilton points to stay at the Conrad or to stay at some place more Irish. Either way, I’m really looking forward to this trip!
When I’m planning a trip, I generally worry about everything that can go wrong: in this case, my biggest fear is driving on the other side of the road. Why must everything be backwards? Still, even if the weather is awful (which it is supposed to be, rain wise at least), I’m looking forward to visiting Ireland for the first time. I actually enjoy visiting places in the offseason because it feels less touristy and crowded. Stay tuned for how to book this award trip for yourself some time!
