I’m making up some material that ‘encapsulates’ Saverocity, and the blog family within it. With such a broad ranging scope of topics I wanted to know what you thought of or associated with Saverocity regarding topic areas.
Please leave your thoughts below in the comments, or via Twitter, Facebook or on The Forum.
Some that sprung to mind were:
- Travel
- Award Travel
- Budgets
- Loyalty Programs
- Intrinsic Value
- Reselling
- Churning
- Credit Cards
- Retirement
- College Planning
- Taxes
- Lifestyle
The goal will be to make a mind map of interconnected subjects, so as much as I like them, I am not looking for compliments so much as pure subject matters. Can you please add new ones to the list? Nothing naughty before 5pm please!

One you’ve mentioned before yourself: beating the system.
Not a topic in of itself but bloggers here often consider the ethical side of the topics you listed.
Matt says
Thanks! Good point on ethics- though we all slip into grey areas at times… Appreciate the input.

I think we’re about the substance involved in personal finance, family travel, miles/points and supporting activities (manufactured spend, etc). At least, what sets us apart is more perspective on why we do what we do and the longer term outcomes. We (attempt to) take our readers through a journey, not just convert some affiliate clicks.
I think the word “Journey” belongs on the list as a bullet.

I like the notion of “Exploring” – because it hits on what you do when you travel but also what you are doing in the financial/MS spaces.
Matt says
Thanks- a good word too.

The behind the scenes guru that runs mileageupdate and with whom I have been friends for 13 years invented the stewardship concept. He then breathed it in my ear so that I may write about it on that site so that it would be picked up by all like minded souls of MS and freely spread round. Like a good virus, the concept was meant to infect all that was trying to kill MS but deny it was doing so. I then delivered my speach at the CLT DO you put together and more began to see and understand things for the better of MS.
Saverocity has helped–you have helped–in broadening this goal and spreading sound and decent ways, means and mindsets that foster many great things. For that I am honored to have met and befriended you as we all try to MS in our own ways but as a gel or group that fights to survive and keep this craft going.
Now I see Saverocity as a beacon of all things good stewardship and practical advice. A place where people are free to invent and share ideas but no one blabbers the deal so that it will die. Instead, said deals are in fact shared but in ways that do whatever can be done to prolong MS as a craft for as long as possible.
Let the good virus spread. Maybe we can turn more heads away from that which hurts into that which helps. Your site and its format and philosophy is doing just that!
Matt says
Awesome- thanks Brother. Not exactly a buzz word but I can’t complain about a comment like that 🙂

Let the virus spread. I like that. Too bad we can’t infect MMS, FTG and all the rest of the pimps.
And yes, good to see discussion and people walk the walk about good stewardship. I just wish more readers would walk the walk. ANYONE clicking on links is part of the problem.
“Your good credit is my best asset” is mantra in BoardingArea et al.

A pox on them all!

Tips/Tricks geared toward the general population reader. Like start a money jar. First wk put $10, next week it’s $11, next week it’s $13 etc. Or when you’re in Target load $20 to a loadable card and in a year you’ll have X for Xmas/Bday. Just small easy tips for a little extra fun/vacation money. I personally stick ALL unexpected refund/Xmas/gift checks/reimbursements into a savings deposit box. And all the monthly pocket change, part of tax refunds, reimbursable car expenses etc. in less than three years I had…no joke…$10,000 in there. I know…no interest…but, that money would have been spent. It paid for 12 days in Europe for the four of us.

FSA and HSA. I still meet people /coworkers who don’t know what these are or how to maximize. Back when my kids were in daycare we’d hit the 5K max by March. We never submitted for reimbursement til Dec and it funded our IRA’s and/or paid off our yearly Caribbean trip in Nov. (also coupled in 1500 in medical). It was an easy way to “save” money and taxes.
Matt says
Good one- thanks!

Stock option plans at work. Soooo many people don’t take advantage of these. What do others do? Do they max it and cash out? Do they buy and sell? Do they Buy and hold? I know a guy who does 15K a year and buys a new car every two years. I think that’s silly. But, he loves cars. For me… I add the raise amount to the new stock offer. Each year I invest more and more without any pain. If you don’t have a stock plan, put the raise into your 401. Don’t ever take a raise. You didn’t have it last year, you won’t miss it this year, but you’ll spend it if its there. I enjoy sharing/learning easy ideas for better financial health. Some of these may be Money 101, but I meet people everyday who don’t do simple things that will payoff.

A great comment- but let me try to clarify- I am looking for the words to put into a spider diagram/mind map that you think of when you describe Saverocity- I’m making some marketing material (for new readers) and I want to know what people think of or why people would suggest reading.
Nicole says
Right. Sorry. I read your note wayyyy too fast while trying to get my kids out of bed and out the door….and then got on a roll. I was thinking about topics I’d like to see covered in the financial section of the Forum. Sorry!!
(And yes, I’m blonde)

No worries! Certainly a great comment and useful to see 🙂

When folks ask me about what I am doing (Travel Hacking/MS) I always provide a short list of bloggers whom I trust to get them going, after we talk it through.
And this is not really a concept but it is a term I always connect to you: Whilst 😉 !

Thanks Elaine! I’m still trying to beat whilst out of my vocabulary – it’s hard being a foreigner 🙂
