I keep on including the address because there is another Hyatt a few blocks away and I hope if I repeat it enough times I will actually turn up at the correct location….
I tried my best to keep the numbers low for this event, but when we consider the presenters who are coming, and the chance to socialize with like minded people interest was incredibly high, and the numbers did creep up a little beyond our initial plans, all told we should have about 115 people attending the CharlotteDO. I have never attended a miles/points gathering, with the exception of meeting MilesAbound, The Miles Professor, Jeanne from Heels First , and Kathy from Will Run for Miles so I don’t know what people might ‘expect’ this event to be like.
My hope, is that it will be a fun, friendly experience where we can share ideas at all levels, and I really want to focus on what I call ‘off stage’ interaction. We are putting together a schedule now for presentations, but I think the best part of this event will be chatting off script and really getting to know one another.
This post is intended to get the ball rolling on that, with so many people arriving there is a good chance you will be at CLT airport with fellow attendees, so you could connect here to discuss things like:
- Carpooling to the hotel (Charlotte has both Uber and Lyft services – feel free to leave your signup codes in the comments)
- Dinner plans for early arrive-rs or those staying later on Sunday. I personally am leaving for CLT for an 8am Sunday flight and happy to ride back in the morning with anyone doing the same. Those that aren’t leaving so early might want to talk about brunch plans or whatnot.
A schedule should be up soon, we are just pinning down the proper flow to the day. If you have any questions that seem unclear, please feel free to leave a comment also and I’ll get it resolved. Matt, thanks for setting this up. I arrive 9:53PM Friday night on USAir 1854 from Phoenix although I originate in PDX. I leave 6:03PM Sunday night.
Would love to share a ride to the hotel with someone renting a car at around 10PM Friday, or share a taxi, or use Lyft where I have credits. I am staying at the conference hotel but I believe several hotels are close by and so would work in terms of sharing a ride into the city.
I have access to AA lounges via the Exec card so could get people in on Sunday late afternoon at the airport if that helps anyone.

That is, assuming there are AA lounges. I did not check. I would be happy to do breakfast/brunch/poke around Charlotte on Sunday too. And let’s remember Sunday is Mother’s Day, one of the brunchiest days of the year. If people are doing brunch, it may be easiest to do it at a restaurant (or restaurants) that might not be destinations for families looking to treat their moms.

It’s about 20 minutes from the airport to downtown Charlotte. Haven’t done that cab ride since before I moved here (i.e. late 90s) but I’d guess you’re looking at maybe $40? Not sure though.
fwiw I’ve taken the airport-downtown bus and it’s pretty convenient, and it will drop you off outside the bus station literally right around the corner from the hotel. The bus station is kinda sketchy late at night, though.

My bf and I are considering going to U.S. National Whitewater Center for whitewater rafting – anyone have any experience with this place?
The Whitewater Center is great fun for those who enjoy outdoor activities! Long lines develop for the more popular venues (like the rafting, zip lines and rope course) as the day progresses, especially on the weekends. We’ve found the best way around that is to get there early and do your favorites events first. Plan on getting drenched when rafting- renting a locker for the day (change of clothes, etc,) is well worth the small additional fee!)
Local CLT-ean (and will be in attendance). A few transportation notes:
The Sprinter bus is definitely the cheapest option, though will take the longest. The bus does have stops along Wilkinson Blvd en route to Uptown and gives you a scenic tour of the…area you wouldn’t want to stay in in Charlotte. It costs $2 each way, cash only. After exiting Baggage Claim, cross the pickup lanes to the bus pickup area and go all the way to the right – that’s where the Sprinter picks up. It will drop you off at the main bus station Uptown, which is coincidentally directly across the street from the Hyatt House. The Sprinter runs about every half hour on the weekend and the ride is 20-30 min. Also, there is a CVS in the same block as the main bus station 🙂
A taxi from airport to Uptown will run +/- $30 with tip.
For anyone driving, Uptown Charlotte has free parking on weekends as long as you can find a spot. Ignore the meters – they only apply weekdays 8-6.

Can any of the locals suggest a place or two that might work for breakfast and/or brunch for Sunday morning, which is also Mother’s Day? Best bets might be places that might not be busy on Mother’s Day. I am thinking we should follow FM’s lead and book some reservations for groups for Sunday AM.

Brunch places that won’t be busy on Mother’s Day is a tall order. I think in general the Uptown restaurants will be less busy because it’s such a hassle for those that don’t live Uptown. So I’m just going to list some of my favorite brunch places Uptown, as well as a few that are easily accessible via the Light Rail (runs from Uptown along South Blvd southward for about 12 miles).

Mert’s Heart & Soul
Valhalla Pub and Eatery (haven’t been but have heard good things)
Halcyon (haven’t been but have heard good things)

Tupelo Honey Cafe (secondary location of the popular Asheville restaurant by the same name)
There are some great brunch options in Plaza Midwood (east of Uptown) but it’s not easily accessible without a car, so I’m leaving those off. I’m happy to provide recommendations in that area if anyone has a car and wants to venture outside Uptown.

Yes, the venue is in Uptown. In Charlotte Uptown = downtown. From what I understand it was a rebranding effort 15-20 years ago to call it Uptown, sounds more classy and all. Seems to have worked – it’s a very nice area, though relatively deserted on weekends.
If you look on a map, Uptown is considered everything within the I-277 loop. Most everything is walkable. Of the restaurants I listed, BLT Steak and Mert’s are within a block or two of the venue. Dandelion and 5Church are about 4 blocks away. And the rest are a little more of a walk, but no more than 10-15 minutes.
Going to South End would require riding the Light Rail, which I believe is $4-$5 round trip. It’s a very clean rail line. About 5 stops to East Blvd stop, where you can walk to the South End restaurants I listed, among others.
Specifically about breakfast Sunday:
I called the hotel and asked if there was a venue there for brunch – there is not. Bar opens at 4PM.
However, we all get free buffet breakfast, which is open 7-10, so folks who want to meet for Sunday breakfast can just show up. I suppose we could drag some tables together if that seems appropriate.
I have another suggestion – how about a Twitter hashtag folks could use Friday night to find out where attendees may be gathering for a drink that evening? Then as people arrive from the airport they could find them. I imagine people may just gravitate to a bar at the venue hotel, but if folks go elsewhere, it’d be good to be able to find them!

The wife and I are arriving ~6:45pm Friday, but not staying at the venue hotel (we’ll be staying Saturday night but need to work on my Hyatt stays!). For those staying around on Sunday, who may have considered doing brunch/lunch (the hotel breakfast ends at 10AM) it may not be easy! I called and/or tried to get online reservations at four of places Robert recommended above above – BLT Steak, Mert’s, Dandelion, 5Church – the four restaurants closest to the hotel. It may work at Dandelion, but we’d need a big group. I am awaiting a callback because the manager has to approve all reservations that day. Mert’s is first come/first serve, with no reservations. And the other two have no availability.
I am hanging around because I am taking a non-stop back to PDX and it doesn’t leave until 6:05PM. I would be interested in joining up with others who will still be in Charlotte, for an excursion somewhere, hanging out at the rooftop pool, or ????
If nothing works out, I am happy to share a cab to the airport in the mid afternoon and hang out at the US Airways Club. I can get 2 people into the lounge with my CITI Exec card.

Heads up to those using Avios to get to Charlotte. I had to pay first class redemption at 27,000 round-trip on my original booking. I’ve been checking back a couple times a week for economy seats, and today, voila, $5 out of pocket to cancel and 18,000 Avios saved/passenger. Hold time for BA call center was 31 minutes.
There is a $2 airport bus called the sprinter, that goes right to the transportation center across from the hotel.

Wondering if any of you Charlotteans know of any breakfast places near the Hyatt House for Saturday morning. Did a quick search but can’t find much in the area that opens before 11 am (mostly brunch spots). I arrive from Boston at 9:00 am and am looking to grab something to eat before the event starts.
Can’t think of anything downtown, as I never go there for breakfast, but there’s an Original Pancake House just outside of uptown on Charlottetowne Ave.
Thanks. If I make it from the airport quickly enough I may try to go there before the event begins. I have never been to The Original Pancake House.
Sounds like you’re looking for more grab-n-go breakfast. Taste is close to the hotel but I’m 99% sure is only open on weekends. There’s a Bruegger’s Bagels in Epicenter (within a block of the hotel). There you can get an egg and ____ bagel type breakfast. For pastries, Amelie’s (french bakery) on S Tryon is great and is definitely open on Saturday. And of course there are always Starbucks/Caribou, but for food I think you’re better off at Bruegger’s or Amelie’s. Also, there is a Burger King in the bus station (across the street from hotel), so worst case that’s an easy one.
