Adding an Authorized User to your card is a good way to get them access to the Spend and Category Bonuses of a Card without them taking a Credit Hit. The downside of this is that you don’t get the signup bonus, but you can always apply for card again in the future to get that – being an Authorized User does not preclude you from obtaining your own account with that specific card.
Over recent posts I have highlighted the benefits of having a Staples Rewards account and on a monthly basis recycling Ink Cartridges for credit towards future purchases. Once you have the Ink Rewards you can cash them out in many ways, either buying products for your personal use, buying Free After Rebate products or Buying Products for resale on eBay.
To maximize the Staples Rewards Program you need to be a Premier Customer, to achieve this you need an annual spend of $1,000 which is very easy to do (over the weekend there was a Free After Rebate software deal for $800!) and I have already qualified my account for 2013. However, what I am seeking to do now is signup a second account, for Mrs Saverocity, so that we can both redeem $40 of Ink per month (initially it will be $20 until her account hits spend). The only problem I have with spending on her account number instead of mine is that I would need a credit card in her name to match billing and shipping.
Since only I have the Ink Bold, I decided to add her as an Authorized User to the card – this allows me to purchase Free After Rebate and other 1 time only deals twice, once for me and once for her – I have heard that Staples can catch people out doing this so I will be experimenting slowly at first, to see if using my office Address for her and my home Address for me is enough to keep things separate.
If I can manage to build up her spend to $1000 using the Authorized User card I will still receive 5x Ultimate Rewards per dollar spent (plus 2 more for online purchases) AND will be able to start cashing in twice the Ink – something that I want to do since I bought a box of 300 empty Carts from eBay recently…
