As you might know, we are holding a ‘Do’ in Charlotte on May 10th, don’t ask me what a ‘DO’ is exactly, as I am not sure, but I am taking it to mean something of a social event, with some knowledge sharing sessions by industry experts, and lots of chatting (with perhaps a beverage or two) to share ideas and make new friends – that’s what I am doing anyway!
The event is taking place in the Hyatt HYATT house™ Charlotte Center City, 435 East Trade Street Charlotte, NC 28202. Note that there are many other hotel options nearby, including a second Hyatt hotel within a stones throw of the hotel.
The chain hotel options are represented well, with mulitple offerings from Hilton, Marriot, Starwood, along with the two Hyatts and a IHG property, it looks to me from this map that pretty much any of these could work, depending on your preferences.

Use Group Code G-SAVE when making reservations online or reference your group as the Saverocity Travel Group if they chose to make reservations through Central Reservations at 888-426-7942.

Room rates are quoted exclusive of applicable state and local taxes (which are currently 15.25%) or applicable service, or hotel specific fees in effect at the Hotel at the time of the meeting.
Additionally, Dia the Deal Mommy just announced that ebates is offering 4% cashback on Hyatt, and I have been told this stacks with our code. I have heard that AAA members are getting a good price at that Hyatt with a King room w sofa quad occupancy for $116+tax found yesterday.
There are also some non chain options available, and for the fancy pants among you a Ritz Carlton nearby too, for about $329 per night. Focusing on the Chain options for a moment, points awards are as follows:
Hyatt (Green Highlighting)
The event hotel is highlighted in Green on the map above, just below it is a second Hyatt that is available, it seems to be just a few minutes walk away.
SPG (Dark Blue Highlighting)
The best two options are the Aloft and Westin, as they seem a little closer than the Sheraton, rates are 10,000 SPG per night for both and the Aloft also has a cash and points for 5000 plus $75. This is a bad use of points. You would be way better off paying cash and using those SPG points for Airline partner transfers.
Hilton (Pink Highlighting)
Here are the three Hilton options, perhaps a good use of orphan Hilton points, but not great value on a points to dollar value here either, I’d likely go the cash route again:
Marriott (Yellow Highlighting)
I’ve not stayed in a Marriot, so am not a member of their programs, but there are a few options for Marriott , with 3 properties to the north of the event, both the Courtyard by Marriott and Marriott City Center (very near each other) are available for $111 per night.
IHG (Light Blue Highlighting)
There is a Holiday Inn to the North East of the event, rate is $130 per night, and could be a points award option for some, though it doesn’t look ideally situated, for the extremely loyal traveler it may be a winner.
Conclusion
Lots of hotel options exist across many chain and non chain hotels in the downtown area – make sure if you don’t stay in Hyatt property that you arrive to the correct Hyatt for the DO! These hotel prices may be further optimized by using discount codes from firms like AAA, and further to which there may be ways to get BRG (Best Rate Guarantee) discounts. Avoid the Sheraton, formerly known as the Blake, formerly known as the Adams Mark. It was a total mess and only recently became a Sheraton. It’s had a bad rep for year and looking at TripAdvisor it doesn’t look like things have changed yet.

Oh yeah–if you’re planning on hitting bars Friday or Saturday, the Holiday Inn, Aloft, Hilton Center City and Marriott Center City are pretty well situated. And the walk from the HI to the Hyatt really isn’t bad.

I was looking at offers on the Hyatt website and saw this:
“Charlotte Area Gold Passport Point Offer
Stay anytime between 5/1/2014 and 7/31/2014 and receive 1500 Hyatt Gold Passport Points. offer valid at Hyatt Place Charlotte/City Park, Hyatt Place Charlotte/Airport and Hyatt House Charlotte/Center City.”
The Saverocity group rate didn’t qualify but I was able to find a slightly cheaper (!) rate that did. A call to Hyatt helped me change the reservation and add the code HGPCLT to get the 1500 points.
Here’s the T&C: “Offer valid for stays May 1, 2014 through July 31, 2014 at HYATT house Charlotte Center City. All hotel reservations are subject to availability and must be made in advance. Offer is not valid with groups/conventions and may not be combined with other promotional offers. Guest must request offer code HGPCLT at time of reservation and check-in to receive bonus points. Hyatt Gold Passport members must choose points for their stay and pay an Eligible Rate. An “Eligible Rate” is any hotel published room rate, including, but not limited to rates found on hyatt.com or any Hyatt Gold Passport Hotel Partner website, the Hyatt Daily Rate, volume, AAA and senior citizen rates, etc.”
BTW the HGPCLT code doesn’t show when you check your reservation on the website but the Customer Service folks assured me it is in the record.

Hey Matt, if you are reading this, can you set up a post where interested attendees could mention flight arrival times and maybe make some connections to share cab rides to the hotel? You don’t need to do any arranging; just provide a post and we can connect with eachother via the comments. My flight arrives at 9:53PM and I would be happy to share a taxi with others who may also be arriving around that time and heading to either the Hyatt or a hotel nearby. Thanks!
