Just a quick note to share that Banco Popular waived the $149 annual fee on my Avianca Vuela card. I wasn’t going to pay a hefty 2nd annual fee, so called to cancel the card for real. I was firm that I wanted to cancel. Agent transferred me to another agent, to whom I reiterated my unwavering intent to cancel. They offered the annual fee waiver with no strings attached. It’s already reflected in my account after 24 hours.
I understand this is not normally offered, so wanted to share that it is possible. I’m happy to keep the card for free since it gives an easy way to prolong the mileage expiration for another 3 years (miles earned from CC extends by 2 years instead of regular 1 year; I have until next year to do this), in what is otherwise a very difficult program to keep miles alive if you’re not actively earning miles (redemption doesn’t extend).

I just cancelled my account 2 weeks ago and wasn’t offered an AF waiver, so definitely YMMV!

Do you know what their annual fee refund policy is? I mean when’s the deadline to close the account. My annual fee will be billed next month, I was thinking of closing the card this month before the fee hits. However, I don’t think the fee can be waived until it actually shows up.

should be at least 30 days grace period after AF posting. Got it back for another family member after cancelling within 30 days.
