IHG is having a significant devaluation. The Gate has a color-coded list of the changes. In this post I want to highlight 3 great values that will be lost with the changes. Book them now if interested.
#1: Holiday Inn Resort – The Lodge at Eagle Crest
Redmond, Oregon (15k becoming 25k)
There’s not much talk about this family-oriented gem in the miles and points world, but it was my favorite points hotel of 2017. The rooms are nothing to write home about (do everything you can to get a golf course view, because the only other view is the parking lot). Rather, charm is in the location and grounds. Central Oregon is an outdoor lover’s dream, and this hotel is in the middle of it all, from Three Sisters to Smith Rock. Enjoy the world-class outdoors by day, then wind down at this home away from home. Each evening before dark I explored a different part of the massive grounds. This is the time when packs of deer come out to feed on the vegetation, and there’s tons of them, in addition to the occasional elk. I was able to get close to some without disturbing them, and I had it all to myself (most people were indoor by then). Then I would walk back to the room to the lovely view of Mount Hood rising above the brilliant hues of twilight.
Here’s a video of deer encounter on my first night at the hotel:
I booked it when it was 10k/night – just a year ago. I would book without hesitation at the current rate of 15k/night. It will become 25k after this devaluation.
#2: Candlewood Suites San Diego
(15k becoming 25k)
San Diego is one of my favorite cities in the US. Here we have a rare 15k/night hotel in a convenient location in the city (as opposed to 30 miles away, which is the standard for this redemption rate). It’s in the so-called Hotel Circle area, where a lot of hotels are, near Old Town and Sea World, and about 6 miles from downtown and Mission Beach.
#3: Holiday Inn Killarney
Killarney, Ireland (15k becoming 25k)
To be honest, I don’t know much about this place, but it made my “interesting hotels list” a while back and approaches 1 cent per point in the summer, at the current 15k rate. Killarney looks pretty.
In a Nutshell
While there are other changes of note, these are the 3 low-category, high-value hotels I will miss the most from this devaluation. All 3 are increasing from 15k to 25k. Book now and lock in the current rate.

I am so grateful, I came across your blog last year. I received the IHG card and have used price marching several times. I love reading about all your hacks since I have three Little’s all under 6. What other credit cards would you say are a definitely must in order to rack in all the perks?

Hi! You must have read it on a different blog on Saverocity 🙂 Personally, I like Citi Prestige a lot (even after the negative changes), for Trip Delay coverage on other family members on award tickets, unlimited Roadside Assistance, Medical Evacuation, and $100 annual fee discount for those who got it as a Citigold client.
