I recently ended my relationship with an advisor. Going though my portfolio to sell things I came across a real winner (not).

Complex - yup
Expensive - you bet

Just validates my decison to go it alone.

As an advisor myself, I really don't like managed accounts.
Sorry, must have missed something - you are referring to the MLP structure, or that he is getting rid of his advisor and going to self manage (the latter I can understand an advisor not liking!)

No, managing yourself is fine, as long as you know what you are doing. I would say most people do not know what they are doing and that's where professionals come in.

By managed accounts I'm assuming OP is talking about an account that he was paying 1.xx% for someone to professionally manage the investments. I'm not a big fan of them because I think a broadly diversified MF or ETF portfolio would be able to beat most professionals.

What is your strategy for going it alone, are you going to self manage or Robo it? Saw that Schwab was about to launch a robo platform without fees.
I am also curious about the new "Schwab Intelligent Portfolio" platform. I read an article on it the other day here: http://thefinancebuff.com/schwab-intelligent-portfolios-game-over-for-betterment-and-wealthfront.html

Do you see any downsides to this service? Would it be any better or worse than putting money into a total stock market index fund?

One downside to consider is that if you put your money into this service vs a total stock market index fund is that you would have underperformed by a fair margin for the past 5 years.
