Paying CC Bill with GC at Branch Bank

I tried to pay my Chase Credit Card Bill with Visa Gift Cards at a branch Chase Bank. I have no Chase bank account. No dice.

I've heard stories of buying GC on whatever credit card and then using those same GC to pay the CC balance. I'm sure there are threads on this already so apologies.

In my story above, is my problem that I didn't have a Chase acc't?

Or does this routine work for some banks and their associated cards, for example Citibank, but not for others.

I'd like to reduce my MO's and this might be the way.

You are right and that is what I do. But I could cut out that step and the very small purchase cost and associated bank trip. Also, I've heard that at times, banks start to ask about large repeating deposits of MO's.

Alternatively, I could add "options" as I drive around town and unload the GC's more efficiently.

Just thinking about all my options.
