Apple Said to Team With Visa, MasterCard on IPhone Wallet

By Matt Townsend Aug 31, 2014 3:27 PM ET

Apple Inc. (AAPL) plans to turn its next iPhone into a mobile wallet through a partnership with major payment networks, banks and retailers, according a person familiar with the situation.

The agreement includes Visa Inc. (V), MasterCard Inc. (MA) and American Express Co. (AXP) and will be unveiled on Sept. 9 along with the next iPhone, said the person who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

The new iPhone will make mobile payment easier by including a near-field communication chip for the first time, the person said. That advancement along with Touch ID, a fingerprint recognition reader that debuted on the most-recent iPhone, will enable consumers to securely pay for items in a store with the touch of a finger.

While companies including Google Inc. have invested in creating ways for phones to make payments in a physical store, U.S. retailers have been slow to adopt the technology, thus limiting its use by shoppers, according to Ben Bajarin, an analyst for Creative Strategies LLC in San Jose, California. That could change with Apple entering the market because iPhones have the largest market share in the U.S., he said.

“Love it or hate it, Apple drives a lot of standards in the industry,” Bajarin said in an interview. “They are the mover in these markets. When they do something, the industry seems to follow.”

Trudy Muller, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, declined to comment, as did Jim Issokson, a spokesman for MasterCard. Representatives from Visa and American Express didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

disclaimer: Apple Fanboy here...

The iPhone 6 model(s) will be priced higher - allegedly due to the costs of materials (Sapphire crystal). So we're still going to pay more even if we don't have to buy the bulky, fugly cashwrap case LOL

I'd still buy that case...tests on Sapphire glass show it to be much more brittle than Gorilla...

This seems to be mostly conjecture.
They used sapphire on the 5's, over the camera and finger print/on button.

NFC, who knows. Some were pretty sure 5 would have it: Rumors-vs--reality

(also a fan but will wait for employee price availability)

Except this time they have manufactured boards with the NFC chips. In fact there's even, somehow, a group that has assembled a 6 from parts: http://www.macrumors.com/2014/08/30/iphone-6-1334-750/

However, good rule of thumb for Apple rumors - when the financial press (FT/Bloomberg/WSJ) are reporting it in the week or two leading up to a release event, it's a lock. Everything else is still conjecture. NFC and the wallet(with rumors surrounding the big three partners needed: Visa, MC, AMEX), larger screen option, plus a separate wearable device are all but confirmed. The rest of the details seem still up in the air...
