Interesting article about rental car insurance in NYT

Per the article it seems having primary insurance with CSP or other may not be enough. I always decline the CDW but wonder how much of a PITA it could be to file a claim.

I sure do take dozens of pictures before and after rental and make them note down any easily visible scratch or ding, even if the attendant rolls his/her eyes.

Thoughts?

I do a photo walk around before and after too. No shame there.

I can attest from personal experience that the primary coverage with the Ritz-Carlton card is hassle-free and very prompt. I blew the back window out of a Mazda crossover in Glasgow last year (don't ask) and I got the reimbursement check less than two weeks after I filed the claim.
