I recently wrote that Chase devalued their Amazon credit card. It turns out the changes are not over, very minor this time around. I recently received this secured message:

Dear Valued Amazon.com Visa Rewards Cardmember,

We want to let you know about some upcoming changes to your rewards program.

Getting cash:

  • You can continue to redeem for cash through a statement credit or direct deposit into a Chase or eligible U.S. checking or savings account.
  • However, rewards check redemptions will no longer be available after November 15, 2014.
Round trip ticket redemption booked by phone:

  • You can continue to use your points for travel with no blackout dates.
  • After November 15, 2014, all travel redemptions will be based on the actual cost. For example, 25,000 points will be required for a $250 ticket. You will no longer be able to redeem points for airline tickets, based on a fixed amount of points.
Charity donations:

  • Points redemption for charitable donations will no longer be available after November 15, 2014.
Click here to see your latest Rewards Program Rules and Regulations.

As always, thanks for being our customer. We appreciate your business and your loyalty.

The latest change has Chase withdrawing from allowing you to receive cash back checks and donations straight to a charitable organization. They also wanted to remind you that you couldn’t redeem for fixed flight redemptions:

If you choose to book a ticket using the “fixed” ticket bonus option, and the actual ticket value is less, the number of points needed to redeem remains the same. For example, an offer to redeem 25,000 points for one roundtrip scheduled airline ticket valued at up to $335 will still require 25,000 points if the ticket you book is valued at $300

New changes for 2017. Just received the following message from Chase (they couldn't simply email it. They emailed me a notice telling me there was a notice... log in, figure out their increasingly clunky UI, go into "secure message center," and read)... highlights are mine--

We're excited to let you know about changes to your Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card.

No action is required on your part - keep using your card the same way you do today - all of the new benefits apply to your account automatically. Shop and earn, it's that simple.

What is changing?

Eligible Prime Members earn 5% Back on Amazon.com purchases
If the Amazon.com account associated with your Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card has an eligible Prime membership, you'll earn 5% Back on purchases from Amazon.com. Eligible Prime memberships only apply to Amazon.com accounts (and not accounts on any other affiliated websites outside the U.S.) and may include, in Amazon's sole discretion: annual and monthly Amazon Prime subscriptions and members of their Amazon Household (excluding Amazon Prime Video and invited guests of an Amazon Prime account), Amazon Prime Fresh, Amazon Family, Amazon Prime Student and trial memberships of Amazon Prime. Each member of an Amazon Household with an eligible Prime membership is considered to have an eligible Prime membership in their own right.

No foreign transaction fees
As of January 10, 2017, there are no foreign transaction fees on international purchases made with the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card.

Office Supply Store purchases will earn 1% Back
As of June 1, 2017, you will no longer earn 2% Back at Office Supply Stores. However, you can earn 3% or 5% Back depending on Prime eligibility status when purchasing office supplies at Amazon.com. To learn more please visit amazon.com/myrewardscard and see your Rewards Program Agreement for details.

Your card design
You will receive a new card with a new look in 2017. Until then, you can keep using your current card. All the new benefits apply to your account now regardless of when you receive your new card.

What is staying the same?

Your APR that varies with the Prime Rate (as published in The Wall Street Journal), credit line, and account terms all remain the same.

Earn a minimum of 3% Back on Amazon.com purchases
You will earn 3% Back on Amazon.com purchases if the Amazon.com account associated with your Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card does not (uh... "not?") have an eligible Prime membership.

You will continue to earn 2% Back on purchases at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, and 1% Back everywhere else you use your card.

Other account benefits
You will continue to enjoy a suite of benefits when using your card account, including Purchase Protection, Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver, and Visa Signature Concierge Service. Visit https://www.chase.com/card-benefits/amazonsig/travel to learn more.
Am I earning 5% Back or 3% Back on Amazon.com purchases?

When you earn 5% Back at Amazon.com: If the Amazon.com account through which you applied for your card account has an eligible Prime membership and your card account is loaded into that Amazon.com account, your card account will automatically earn 5% Back. However, if you switch Amazon.com accounts, use multiple Amazon.com accounts, or your card account is loaded into multiple Amazon.com accounts, then your card account may not automatically earn 5% Back and may instead earn 3% Back. In such cases, you will need to confirm your card account number and select your card account on that Amazon.com account with eligible Prime membership in order to earn 5% Back. To learn how, visit the "Manage Payment Options" page via "Your Account" page at Amazon.com.

When you earn 3% Back at Amazon.com: If the Amazon.com account through which you applied for your card account does not have an eligible Prime membership, your card account will earn 3% Back on Amazon.com purchases. If your card account is currently earning 3% Back and is loaded into an Amazon.com account with an eligible Prime membership, you will need to confirm and select your card account to earn 5% Back. To learn how, visit the "Manage Payment Options" page via "Your Account" page at Amazon.com.

Your card account will no longer earn 5% Back at Amazon.com and will earn 3% Back instead, if the Amazon.com account from which you applied for your card account or the Amazon.com account you confirmed and selected to earn 5% Back:
no longer has an eligible Prime membership;
no longer has your card account loaded in that Amazon.com account;
is closed;
is used to select a different card account to earn 5% Back at Amazon.com; or
is used to apply for another Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature card account that is approved and loaded in that Amazon.com account (that new card account will earn 5% Back at Amazon.com).

Whether a purchase earns 3% Back or 5% Back is determined at the time your eligible Amazon.com purchase is made.

Please refer to your Rewards Program Agreement for details.

To see what you earned on previous Amazon.com purchases, visit your chase.com accounts page, select your Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card, and view your transaction history. To see detail on rewards earned with a particular transaction, click "See details" to view rewards earned under "Rewards earned with this transaction."
How can I check whether I am earning 3% Back or 5% Back on Amazon.com purchases?

To verify whether your card account earns 3% Back or 5% Back on Amazon.com purchases, sign in to your Amazon.com account and follow these steps:
Visit amazon.com/youraccount;
Click "Manage Payment Options" under the "Payment Methods" section; and
Expand the details of your Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card to see how much you are earning on Amazon.com purchases. If your Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card is earning 3% Back on Amazon.com purchases and you have an eligible Prime membership, you can learn how to verify your card and earn 5% Back on Amazon.com purchases.
