CC surcharges in Australia?

We're going down under in a few weeks. I remember reading that CC surcharges are widespread and steep there. Is this still correct? Better to pay for meals, tours, etc with cash then (ugh)? Or are the fees low enough to make it worthwhile to earn the points on meals, etc?

The places I've encountered credit card surcharges in Australia have mostly been at hotels, and then only at 1.5%. As I'm usually using a 2% (or more, depending on how you value particular points/miles) cash back or equivalent to 2% or more in value card, I pay with the CC anyway, unless it is the last night of the trip and I've got a lot of cash hanging around.
