If you want to talk to amex through chat the trick is to click on pay bill and within a minute chat will pop up

I've had that popping up with just sitting on the page after you log in.

Many times you have to wait a while but if you sit on the payment page it pops up much quicker

I actually prefer secure messaging like with Chase, as all incoming/outgoing messages are automatically logged.
