You know, sometimes its just Karma. United, and nearly all of the other US airlines, consistently screw their customers over in so many ways that road warriors know all too well--and I'm not even referring to the arbitrary gutting of FF programs. One example: in early December I had to cancel a flight due to illness and Doc's orders. Tons of open seats on the flight, so my cancellation 48 hours prior to flight time wasn't depriving the airline of revenue from another customer. But no matter: BAM--the airline held fast to a no refund permitted policy, and a $200 change fee. I have no plans to travel to that location for over a year, so I'm likely going to be out the entire $890 ticket. Sometimes the ethical code of "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" is appropriate, particularly in those very rare instances when individuals can get over on a greedy, soul-less corporate giant like United that gets over on them most of the time. We picked up two tickets this morning, and my conscious is completely clear. And it will pose no ethical dilemma whatsoever to file a DOT complaint against United as soon as they cancel the ticket, even though I don't expect to prevail.
