Things to do Near JFK? Good (Cheap) Overnight Hotel?

I will have to book a positioning flight to JFK for next Jan. Note the middle of winter time frame for a flight FROM CLE, so we will try to make sure we have a significant time cushion in case of snow delays and cancellations. We will remain vigilant and flexible.

I've been through JFK once but have no idea of the actual surrounding area. Anyone have ideas as to things to do or hotels that are most convenient? No, this isn't a trip killer if we have to sit in a hotel the entire time. But I thought I would ask; asking has paid off big-time in the past! TIA.

(Impatiently waiting for CX to clear my AA award booking ... )

Well, thanks. A Casino will keep my wife happy and I wouldn't mind wasting a couple of hours there myself. I'm never a successful gambler and too cheap to spend any more time there than that, but this is a great idea. As is the Holiday Inn (will check for an airport shuttle, but there are always options!).

There a a bunch of hotels near JFK airport. Im almost certain that Holiday Inn has a shuttle (Ive seen them driving)
