Serve Or Bluebird Closure

I’ve had both a Serve and a Bluebird account since October 2012. Today, I received two emails from American Express stating they will close one of my accounts and I must call them by July 27 and let them know which account I’d like to keep. Their IT department must have reconciled the social security number database and found duplicates.

Letter from Serve:

Hello <name withheld>,

We are writing to inform you that for security reasons, our customers can only have one American Express Serve® Account or one Bluebird Account. You have signed up for more than one of these Accounts and while we appreciate your interest in our products, one Account can remain open and all additional Accounts must be closed.

We’d like to know which Account you’d like to keep open. Please contact Serve Customer Service at 1‑800‑954‑0559 before July 27, 2013 to let us know. If we have not heard from you by this time, we will select one Account to keep open and will close all others. If you have any remaining funds in your closed Account(s), we will send a check to the address you have on file with us.

Please contact American Express Serve Customer Service at 1‑800‑954‑0559 to notify us of which Account you would like to keep open. Thank you for using American Express Serve.

Thanks,

The American Express Serve Team

Both cards are quite similar now that they offer bill pay. Serve seems to be better because they offer “deals” like a Living Social or Groupon type. I like how Serve allows me to fund with a credit card for free. I don’t go to Walmart to load the Bluebird too often, and have some difficulties obtaining Vanilla Reloads. I also have been running into problems buying Moneypak to load into Serve.

I am leaning on keeping the Bluebird because I have most of my bill pay and Topcashback accounts set up. Before closing one of the accounts, I’ll be sure to load it with some more money.

What do you think I should do?

  • To me BB account is more stable. I’m yet to have problem with them. Whereas Serv locked my account all the times I tried to add funds from newly linked “debit” card. Closed it to open BB.

    • Good point, I find BB to be more stable. Good thing I have a couple of weeks to close it. I’m thinking of funding Serve with a credit card, transfer to my banking account, and then close Serve. If I can buy/find some MoneyPaks I’ll load some up too.

  • How’d you get both? They made me cancel my Serve when I opened the Bluebird.

    • Sorry for the late reply Nick — I’m not sure how I got both. I signed up for Bluebird online then Serve a couple of weeks later. Serve acknowledged I had a Bluebird application and told me I could not have a Serve account. A few weeks later I received a Serve card, called it in to activate and the CSR activated it and had both cards.

      • Ya, I had the same issue. I had gotten a serve account when it was initially released and had problem after problem. Then I saw bluebird and tried to sign up and it told me to cancel my serve account first then I had to call customer support to have them delete it completely because it was still causing an issue with BB. Ever since then BB has been amazing with not ONE issue and I transfer, load, spend, etc DAILY. Love my BB!

  • Did they end up following through and closing the one you specified you liked less?

    • Yup they did. They were pretty strict about it. I wound up closing the Serve card
