An American Express Product You Should Avoid Except This One Time

American Express launched a product called the “My Secure Paycard” and can be found at all Walgreens, Duane Reade, and Rite Aid. From what I can tell, it is basically an American Express gift card that you can purchase up to $500 at a $5.95 fee without the gift card label. It’s not that good of a product because it’s not reloadable and there are no cash back type rebates when buying this card.

American Express

Milenomics is a pro at fee free Green Dot cards and this AMEX product can be had fee free from 5/11 to 5/17 at Duane Reade and my guess at Walgreens as well because Walgreens owns Duane Reade. So bust out your 5x Citi Thank You Point cards, Old Amex Blue, or any other 5x return at your local drugstore purchase.

  • How do we unload this card though? Does it have free ATM access?

    • You would liquidate it as you would with a regular American Express Gift Card. No it doesn’t have ATM access.

      • If you’re MSing I see it as just an unnecessary step.

For regular spend or someone dealing in retail arbitrage though you’ve successfully allowed yourself 5% anywhere if used a 5% card to pay for it.

    • If you were unloading the entire balance, did the vendor place a $1 hold? You may have better luck just spending it down swiping at in store purchases where ever you can
