Saturday Special: Hyatt Regency Mainz

RTW Nov 2014 1830

This is part of our Thanksgiving Round the World trip, you can find my initial thoughts / intro here, Flying All Nippon Airways Square ClassThe Grand Hyatt Tokyo review, and The Grand Hyatt Beijing review

Reason for choosing:

Through many lessons learned, we were able to change the flight home around such that we got a 23 hour layover in Frankfurt.  We decided that it would be nice to cap off the trip with a visit to the Christmas markets.  Mainz was close enough to Frankfurt’s primary airport (FRA) (~25 min taxi ride) and the Hyatt Regency Mainz was within walking distance to the Christmas market.

Lobby and Check in/Check Out Experience:

Check in and check out were both quick and efficient. They both occurred in the lobby.  While I checked out, my mother in-law was able to have breakfast in the restaurant at no cost (I of course was fine skipping, because I thought I had the great Lufthansa First Class Terminal to look forward to).  For my mother in law, and perhaps all of us (even me who skipped it), the meal ended up being the best of the day.

Where the hotel stood out:

The hotel was quaint. It was in a good location right on the Rhine River within walking distance to the main square.  The staff was great.

The room was very small but if there was just two of us it would have been very nice for a couple nights. The bed was nice and the bathroom a little over sized given the small room.

Where the hotel fell a little short:

One word sums up the room: Small.  If it had just been two of us it would have been very comfortable, but having three in the small corner room was rough on the last night, even with a roll away for my mother in law. I’ll note, the corner room appeared to be the only one that the hotel permitted 3 adults in. We ended up paying about 50% more for the corner room than we would have paid for a regular room, specifically because we were trying to be economical in our last night.

Wrapping Up:

We would stay here again to tour the city.  While it was small for this particular trip the Hyatt Regency Mainz would be a nice choice for a long weekend. I’d especially recommend this hotel if seeing the Christmas Markets, as its only about a 10 minute walk, during which, you can really take in some of the atmosphere of the small city.
