Check your E-mail – British Airways Visa Credit Card Spend Bonus

BA Spend Bonus 2015

I received an e-mail today from Chase / British Airways essentially offering a 2x bonus (I think its really 2.25x because you get 1.25x on all spend) I’m not sure if this is targeted (although my e-mail did have identifying features which make me think it might be). I haven’t used my British Airways Visa credit card a whole lot, so that could be a contributing factor. Here’s the additional details:

Earn 9,000 Bonus Avios after you spend at least $9,000 on your British Airways Visa® Card from January 1 to March 31, 2015.
1. Use your card. Spend $9,000 in purchases on your British Airways Visa Card during the promotion period. Any purchase counts!¹
2. Receive 9,000 Bonus Avios. These are in addition to the Avios you earn on every purchase, everyday.
3. Redeem for as little as 9,000 Avios on British Airways and oneworld® plus taxes, fees and carrier charges. For the most current information visit ba.com.

It seems pretty vanilla, spend $9,000 and get 9,000 Bonus Avios in addition to the 11,250 you’d get from regular spend. Ironically, I did recently book a 20,000 Avios flight, so this’ll help me replenish.

Please comment if you received a targeted spend bonus for your British Airways Visa.

  1. I got the same email. I don’t think I’ll be making any efforts towards that goal. A mere 2x with such a high spending target…why not just use a UR/MR earning card on a category that earns 2x or more?

    • @Mike – its certainly not worth it if you can generate points more cheaply in other ways. For me, I may just do it with what would normally be 1x categories. That and I just can’t bring myself to transfer UR points to BA. They seem much better spent moving to Hyatt or KrisFlyer (just my opinion).

  2. Got the same email, but was planning to cancel card this month before annual fee hits. Now I’m wondering if I should pay the $95 annual fee to keep the card and run my tax payment on it. Credit card fees plus annual fee would be $263 for 20,250 Avios. It’s not terrible for Avios, but would prefer it to be less than $0.01. Could also use for buying Amex gift cards through TCB.

    • @MilesMath – That’s a tough call… I try to keep all miles I collect at less than $0.01 (aside from topping off an account). Question – how much spend did you put on the card this year, and in recent months?

  3. I’ve used my card regularly and got the bonus email. There was a similar one last year… same 9000 avios bonus, but spend required was $4500 instead of $9000. I bet it isn’t targeted. Has anyone with the BA card NOT gotten the bonus email?

    • I hope so too… If worse comes to worse, perhaps call Chase and say that a friend received the offer and you’d like consideration… you never know, they might just give you some points for calling.

  4. I called Chase today about this and the guy said they don’t offer the bonus spend and it must be BA. This doesn’t make sense though because Chase wants you to use their card right? I got this offer for 1/1/14-3/31/14 at $4,500 in spend and want to do it again 1Q 2015…

    • @Nick – Odd, I haven’t tried calling, but the e-mail I received specifically came from Chase and not British Airways. Perhaps try calling again and getting someone different?
