Super Hot Deal At Staples It Burns

Hat Tip to Big Habitat for posting: Staples $10 Gift Card on $50 ePromo

I bought $200 and received four $10 ePromos – the $200 gift card was issued almost instantaneously and after the Shop Discover portal click through it was used to purchase a Nordstrom gift card.

Because the $10 ePromo can only be used one per transaction, my plan is to buy four more Nordstrom gift cards, but at lower denominations, $25. Even after the shipping fee, this will become a money maker.

Gift Card

The math:

  • Sell the $25 at 89% and add in the shipping fee the loss is $4.74
  • Add in the $10 ePromo and the money made is $5.26 per $25 card
  • Add in any % from the portals and it would be more than $21 in profit for this promotion

      • Well. But we will be loosing $22 when we re sell Nordstrom GC in Giftcard Grany. so net profit is -$1 other than portal bonus.

        Did I miss anything ?

        • If you do exactly what I did with, you’d profit $11.51. The $21 profit above is how I would execute the $10 ePromo gift certificates.

Here’s the math for what I did:

$200 for the Staples GC. Buy Nordstrom click through Discover for 5% back loss on this card is $12.89

The remaining four cards, after clicking through Discover you should expect to make $5.4, add in the free $40 from the ePromo cards and you will have $45.40 back. When you sell the four Nordstrom cards, you will receive $89 back, for a loss of $21 in total. Subtract the $21 and $12.89 from $45.40 back and you will profit $11.51

          • Thanks. I missed the Discover cash back. Now it make sense. Thank you for the detailed explanation.

  • I thought staples giftcards could only be used in store? Your example above would lead me to believe that is not the case. Can you confirm one way or another?

    • That is correct, up until November 2013, you could only use Staples gift cards in store only. Now, you can shop until you drop 🙂

      • I attempted to purchase gift cards with my Staples gift card and they called me and left a message that I couldn’t purchase gift cards with the egift card and they were cancelling the order. He said they would mail me a gift card so I’m confused now why they didn’t just give me another egift card. Oh well, it was worth a try!
