Latest Credit Cards That I Applied & Lessons Learned

After my last set of applications, I applied:

  • Citi Forward
  • Discover
  • Chase Ink Bold
  • US Bank Cash+
I have not really used the Cash+ card as much as I thought I would with the 5% back, there were a couple of times I charged in the home improvement categories. At this time, I find myself chasing the points more than I want cash back.
My latest cards that I applied for in this order:
  • Barclay’s US Airways
  • American Express Hilton HHonors
  • American Express Starwood Preferred Guest business
  • Citi American Airlines
My original intentions were to also apply for the Citi American Airlines. I wanted to add another card, preferably a hotel one where it does not offers me a free night as I am not ready to redeem it yet. Therefore, Chase’s Hyatt, Citi Hilton, etc I would not sign up for this round. The only card that I could think of adding in this round would be the free American Express Hilton card. This card would enable me to have access to AXON and GLON awards when redeeming the Hilton points. Against all sense and what’s been posted online, I also did not listen to apply with a different issuer. What wound up happening with the SPG card, AMEX told me to call them or they’d call me in 2 to 3 business days. My original thought was that this would be a similar process to Chase where they needed to verify my business. Unbeknownst to me, this was not the case. What transpired:[exchanged pleasantries]
CSR: Did you make any other applications today?
Me: With American Express?
CSR: Yes.
Me: Yes, I did, I applied for the Hilton card.
CSR: Ok great, so our policy is to hold the second application because we want to make sure the second application is valid and real because sometimes people accidentally apply for two and we wanted to make sure. But in this case, you did this intentionally. This is because there are instances where people do this to have one credit card pull.
Me: Ok, no problem. At that point, I figured adding the Citi AA card would not be the smartest decision when they would do a credit check 5 days from now. So listen to what people say online in your next churn. Apply with different banks/issuers in your rotation.

On a different note, American Express also expedites new cards for free as well, which I told him to make a note of if I am approved.

I suppose I could have called AMEX and cancel the application on the SPG and do the Citi AA.

I do not want to sign up for credit cards that in the end I will cancel, although the US Airway card may wind up that way. I want to be able to create value by manufacturing spend without the need of closing out cards.Update: While writing this, I actually wound up cancelling the application for the SPG because they did not perform the credit pull and I am in the midst of applying for the Citi AA card. This is to keep all of the credit checks all in one day.
